My Tom Skerritt story. On one of my many attempts at college, I was in some classes with Tom's daughter-in-law. Tom's nephew was also my choir teacher in high school. Anyway, for a period of about ten years, I would run into Tom at various locations.

Finally didn't see him for a while. In 2001 I moved to Crested Butte, Colorado for the summer. My parents came to visit and we went out to dinner. Two tables away and I hear, "Holy cow." I look up and wouldn't you know it. "Stop following me!" he said laughing.

I encountered him again at my college later. I decided not to be that awkward guy and stood my distance, but he saw me, smiled and said hello again. Talked a bit about what he was doing in the Seattle Arts scene (my school and Cornish had drama programs).

Ran into him every so often after that, at a theater or some such event. "Are you stalking me?" Ha ha, of course not. Be sure to tell your attorneys, ha ha. (I was also somewhat, um, distinctive-looking, in this era.)

The first time was me awkwardly asking if he was the guy from Alien and him saying yeah and then actually having a little chat with me, which I thought was very cool. Then I ran in to him at another place a few weeks later and said hello again. Another nice chat.

Whelp, about that time ol' Tommy realized that he was just a CN simp with a head full of feathers going up against a man with an actual education. Go lie down, Tommy

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

Just thinking about how kids don’t play out anymore so there’s loads of them who’ve never been stung by stinging nettles. So, if you’re out with your kids today and you see some nettles, teach them about your childhood by pushing them over x

Klickitat County has about 22,000 population all in and I think that's if you include the goats. More people than that live in my building. Nobody goes there; you go THROUGH there. When I drove big rigs that was the shortcut from Portland to Spokane.

"Constiutional sheriffs believe that they interpret the Constitution,” says a Washington lawmaker critical of the right-wing movement. “In practice, it ends up being a failure to enforce the wildlife laws, women’s reproductive freedom, … the laws related to firearms safety."

Riding back home in a friend’s car and we just got pulled over by the rurales. I wonder how well that “Sovereign Citizen” bullshit would play here in Vietnam.

Just bought The Illustrated Gormenghast Trilogy and the authorised biography of The Bangles on Kindle for 99p each. I expect the recommendation algorithm to deliver something fairly spectacular in a couple of minutes.

We just stopped at an expressway rest area for rest area purposes (this vehicle contains both a three-year-old and a 62-year-old male with equivalent levels of bladder capacity). I’m in the gents and on the way out I see an absolutely ENORMOUS dude.

Like defensive lineman huge. Six foot six and around 300 pound. Black hoodie, weird little beard, Kangol hat on backwards and oh wait shit I know that guy. I washed my hands first because I’m not a savage and caught him on the way out.

It’s Mars, this guy we met when we went to Di Linh a month ago. Mutual friends of friends and a cool guy. His wife and kid were there too and our friends as well. So we all hung out and chatted for a bit and it was really nice.

Walking through a rural Vietnamese market this morning, a 5’11” 209 lb guy carrying a six pack of Coke and sweating profusely. Some kind of metaphor in there.

So here's my Matt Howarth story. My AuDHD brain insists on telling you all about how my whole life I have chased unique art styles, especially in comics. Take it as read that I grew up idolizing Walt Simonson's Manhunter and his one-off Dr Fate special, any issues of Heavy Metal I could find, etc.

No idea why. Undiagnosed and self-medicated AuDHD means a lot of stuff that happened in my 20s was inexplicable. But I talked to one of my heroes for a while on the phone, and it was cool. RIP Matt Howarth.

I called Matt. He answered. I told him who I was and he had heard of the book. Completely off the top of my head, I pitched him a story set in the Old West about an alien ship crashlanding outside of a small town in Texas. Maybe this is just my dim memory (It was 40 years ago),

But I recall him being engaged and interested. I remember he was asking questions, and not questions like "How did you get this number?" We talked for an hour or so. I agreed to write up some stuff for him to review. I hung up the phone.

And the day job is actually the night job. I worked in the machine shop at a large aircraft manufacturer in Seattle, who shall remain nameless. I work the swing shift, 3 to 11:30 PM. Now, I have no idea whatsoever how it transpired, but I got a hold of Matt's phone number.

Maybe it was someone at a con who knew him. I forget. But I had Matt Howarth's home phone number, AND I knew the secret dial-out code to make long distance phone calls on Airplane Co's dime, AND I had a job where I mostly sat at a desk all night and wrote stuff for myself.

These weirdo artists convince me that I can make a comic book, too. It's about 1986 and the bw boom is on. My friend Steve and I hook up with Stan Shaw and create *Billy Nguyen, Private Eye*. Sales are... not encouraging, but we keep at it. Got some good reviews.

Stan's art is outstanding, consistent, and unique. My writing is...plentiful. We do some cons, get some press, yay us. Not quite making enough money to quit the day job. Not quite making enough money to buy lunch at the day job, tbh.

Jump ahead a couple of years. I'm in a comic shop and I see Ron Post on the cover of a comic book. It's issue #3 so I dig around and find #1 and 2 as well. To this day, the only creator who comes even close to Howarth's conglomeration of art, SF, and dangerous music is @evandorkin.bsky.social

Then I find Savage Henry, in which Matt put the title character and his clone girlfriend in a band with an atomic goddess, Hunter S Thompson's alter ego, and Cthulhu, along with Conny Plank. Loving it.

I don't know exactly when it was; late high school or when I was in the Air Force, but I came across a BIZARRE comic strip. It was Ron Post holding an alien baby and talking about a band called SPK. The article also talked about other bands:

Chrome Bauhaus Foetus The music was described in words usually found in Jack Kirby dialogue. It sounded weird, dark, confusing, and fucking dangerous. I had to have some. But alas, 98002 was not a happening ZIP code back then. (Still isn't.) I might as well have been trying to score a moon rock.

I also was on the lookout for interesting music, although being a suburban Nuevo Wavo baby meant that I could only find bands that were on SNL in my local shops. I could find DEVO and Elvis Costello and the Cars, because they had been on TV so the Pay n Save in Auburn had the LPs.

The best part about this whole story is that I haven't thought about this motherfucker in YEARS. Died in reviled obscurity. Nice.

Are we not, as a nation, long past giving even the tiniest shit about what dribble leaks out of the speech center of Bill Maher's decrepit brain? Put him on the same iceberg as DJT and push them both out to sea.

Jonathan@jonathansocials.com

Maher claiming Trump dislikes sycophants flies in the face of literally everything Trump does to demand loyalty and punish anyone not kissing his ring.
