I'd also add that the COVID sales boom attracted attention from investors/executives who don't understand and don't care to learn about the games industry, but did not subsequently exit the space. They simply kept slamming square pegs into round holes.

She's "racing to save" the Xbox from... basically herself. One of my takeaways from covering PNW gaming news for the last nine years is that the threats to Xbox are coming from inside the house. From the Activision Blizzard acquisition onward, they'd have done better by throwing darts at a wall.

Xbox is currently leading the entire video game industry in... profiles of its CEO. Day ending in Y? Another CEO profile. Amazing. Anyways, "...the price of the Helix console has internally been projected to cost consumers between $1,200 and $1,800..." So, good luck with that.

The Michael Myers mask in HALLOWEEN started as a Captain Kirk mask that they cut up and painted white. He's technically William Shatner in kabuki makeup.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Last month we lost our jobs. This month we made new ones. Introducing X BUTTON: an independent gaming network from three ex-IGN employees. A new weekly Nintendo podcast! A new weekly video game podcast! And that’s just the start, but we can’t do it without your help! www.patreon.com/cw/XButtonShow

To articulate a thought I've been having for some time: It baffles me why people keep saying "AI will let us make games faster" as if that's a desirable thing. The only people who care about that are shareholders. Meanwhile, anyone on Steam is drinking from a firehose.

It's a little fascinating how focus-grouped this is. She's careful to keep the tone light and utopian while never using the term "AI," but this is absolutely an AI initiative.

We are looking for an comic book artist / illustrator to collaborate with to make a leaflet for 10-18yo on how to resist AI. We're especially interested in artists based in Canada 💖 If you're interested, please DM us or email contact@aicaution.ca

To some extent this strikes me as a symptom rather than a disease. The AI slop movement is driven by the same faster-cheaper-more bullshit that's watering everything else down. This isn't the future; it's trying to accelerate to avoid the crash.

personally think if the line is going to be “no gen ai in anything” then the you might have to consider divesting from AAA games entirely because this is just what the industry is now, whether they admit it so publicly or not

I took a random swing by watching BLOODY TENNIS on Shudder. Goddamn, what a weird movie. I'm wondering if it might not be of a piece with BATTLE ROYALE, where it's such a dark satire of a particular time/place/culture (here, teenage athletes) that it ends up being more surreal than anything else.

I cleared the campaign on ARIZONA SUNSHINE last night. It's not a bad little shooter, but my biggest takeaway right now is how refreshing it felt to play something that wasn't a fucking roguelike/lite. Less relevantly: I want a mod that turns every weapon in that game into the drum-fed autoshotgun.

I don't believe there are any problems with modern AAA gaming that cannot be solved by firing everyone with an MBA into the sun. That'd actually solve a lot of other things, too.

Giovanni Colantonio@marioprime.bsky.social

The real problem with AAA games today is that they are no longer comfortable just being “the one with the reload minigame” or “the one where you have the needle gun.” We must return to the age of the Hero Feature.

Hey gang, if you own a #Playdate handheld, be sure to check whatever email address you attached to it. Apparently a security certificate expires next week and it's mandating a software update so your Playdate stays compatible with Panic's servers.

I catch some heat for this occasionally whenever I report on legal issues. There's a reason that journalists write this way. It's not a conspiracy.

This is going to come up, so uh: Websites have to be careful with what words they use and how they use them to avoid lawsuits. And to be accurate and fair in a situation.

I'm bleakly fascinated with the 21st century's ability to exploit new parts of the human experience. First COVID forced you to explain to adults that they should care about other people. Now it's AI stripping out the basic purpose of art and communication. It's all techno-solipsism.

"Influencers" really will receive a box of swag and IMMEDIATELY turn around and sell it for massive profit. Sometimes they even brag about it. It's the games press who are corrupt tho, remember

Jesse Gomez@itsjessegomez.bsky.social

Only 100 functioning Silent Hill: Townfall CRTVs were made, sent out to different influencers before the games release, and someone's already selling theirs for over $300 😬 It's a cute toy, but savage to be like "I do not need it".

Were I to construct a pair of middle fingers as big as the sky, stretching from horizon to horizon in an overpowering display of nonverbal profanity, unavoidable, unignorable, it would not approach the depth or breadth to which this guy needs to fuck off.

I would need to enter a richly supplied technical workshop, montage for some time, and come out of my labor with a device that allows me to flip people off so hard with the power and force of the Chicxulub asteroid impact. Only then would I approach my needs in this specific instance.

I am in need of a middle finger that lands like approximately 1,000 Bruce Lee one-inch punches: a non-verbal blast of raw disdain that reduces people to stammering wrecks of themselves. Clothes shred; eyebrows burn; unborn descendants vanish, their timelines erased. This approaches sufficiency.

Japan’s cautious approach to growth and staff retention once seemed old-fashioned and unambitious. Against a backdrop of AAA failed gambles, gratuitous executive compensation and uncontrolled costs, I spoke to experts who explained why that conservative stance has never felt more modern.

Why has Japan been relatively insulated from the global games industry crisis? Japanese industry consultant @serkantoto.bsky.social, expat developer @liambme.bsky.social, and a Japanese game studies professor tell us about protection laws, domestic bias, slow-growth mindsets and the cost of living.

If you were one of the many people I talked to at PAX West 2026 who were confused why Washington's Secretary of State had a booth in the expo hall: me too. Fortunately, I am occasionally moved to do a Journalism and I went to ask him directly. This is the story:

Pretty bummed about this one. I'd covered Polyarc a lot in the last few years, and met a bunch of the team on a couple of occasions. They'd even given me one of their Quill statuettes.

First thought for a hallucinogenic game (hallucinogame) is MOUTHWASHING.

Veselekov@veselekov.bsky.social

My friend explained to me how most games are designed like Opiates where the point is to escape reality and blunt the pain of day to day life. Built around convenience, addiction etc. She then said she wishes games should be Hallucinogens that would expand her reality, make her think. Legend
