it's also worth pointing out that one of the major contributors to the petition is organising donations to the Game Worker Hardship Fund and has non-stop been pointing out the blood sweat and tears that the team at Bioware was putting into the project. So yeah sure keep saying it's about consumerism
I don't 100% agree with the wording in the ongoing petition but I think whats absurd is the idea that saving Mass Effect is being pursued from a 'consumer first' perspective. honestly if you're that jaded to not realise it's a cry for help from a community that doesn't know what else to do then idk
the absolutist attitude that some folks have is toxic and it'll rot you from the inside if you let it. there is no way for anything to progress or move forward if you keep cutting the legs out from underneath anything that could move the world forward a realistic inch rather than a hypothetical mile
like, what exactly do you expect them to do? they're upset, angry, and need a purpose. they're hammering the fuck out of Andrew Wilson's inbox, you've got Canadian politicians floating the idea of nationalising Bioware, hell, you've even got Geoff Keighley of all people pissed off about it all, and-
It got worse! "this is what happens when you make bad games" = i.e. refusing to engage with historical context "they should never have released the 2020 trailer" = i.e. not understanding how marketing works "their policy is to not hire anybody who isn't left leaning" = total lack of braincells
todays news about bioware sucks. what also sucks is the maddening explosion of people straight up saying shit like "well, like it or not the culture war folks had a point" they absolutely did not and i think you should maybe stop existing if you feel that way
it absolutely does not help that you have certain individuals in the dev-space (one in particular who I won't name) that definitely reads from an LLM written essay saying developers should engage with the most putrid, toxic, rancid trash on community forums when it's clear they're only there to hate

This is my one consolation: BioWare won't be forgotten, because it exists in the DNA of every single game designer who was influenced by their games. Everything we make exists in the shadow of greatness we once sat in. I can't forget.
As much as it's not really a surprise, especially given the industry right now coupled with the Saudi sale, the news today still made me sad. BioWare joins other great studios of the past, with a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. ๐ www.forbes.com/sites/paulta...

like, I'm flying around in officially licensed aircraft in a game endorsed by companies that actively engage in the genocide of palestinians meanwhile the game will remind me that those engaged in corpocapitalist ventures are fucking evil and can't be trusted. it's so jarring that it warps my head
I feel like Wings of Theve is the most western (hollywood) inspired Ace Combat game in terms of it's overall storyline and vibes, but there's one specific thing that happens in it that feels distinctly NOT that and after sleeping on it I think it's maybe now my favourite part of the game.
-cause the game makes you feel like you might have fucked up, that you're responsible for something bad happening and you're punished for it. But you rise beyond the punishment, become an inspiration to your allies, and are emotionally and literally absolved for your 'crimes'. AC8 falls flat there -

the basic gist of that First Strike story, because some folks expressed interest; mid-late 2023, I tried establishing the project in cooperation with a now defunct modding group. in that time I had my creative capabilities, mental health and overall willpower grinded into near-total nothingness.
to find out they were gonna do a First Strike standalone release next year, almost entirely reliant on GenAI, with just 5 missions and firefight for $50USD is the most batshit insane thing I've ever heard. and to think I wanted to make a fan mod that did 7 missions (but that's another story)
