“We’ve established that the observatory is fully functional,” said Julie McEnery, #NASARoman senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. “The telescope can guide and take exposures, data flows appropriately, and we can slew from one place to another for observations.” 🔭

Carnegie Science's Anthony Piro summarizes recent advances in the theoretical understanding of tidal disruption events, including how scientists can use them to measure black hole masses and probe the process by which stars are eaten. This lecture was part of STScI's 2026 Fall Colloquium.

Through powerful stellar winds, these young glittering stars at the center pushed away most of the gas from which they were born, creating this central void that offers a ghostly appearance in this Hubble image of LHA 129-N44. Credit: ESA, NASA, D. Gouliermis. 🔭

“All of Roman’s sweeping surveys will rely on the Wide Field Instrument. Many of the mission’s primary goals, like studying dark matter and dark energy, wouldn’t be possible without it, so it’s both exciting and a huge relief to see that it’s working well!” #NASARoman 🔭

NEW: The contrasting colors in NGC 7129 show differences in temperatures detected by #NASAWebb. The gold cavity at the left is hottest due to the central star and other embedded stars. The clumpy, red matter is colder and represents jets from less mature protostars: https://news.stsci.edu/3U8T7Bz 🔭

Astronomers confirmed that extreme debris disks share three key properties: smaller dust grains than those in protoplanetary or classic debris disks, a high concentration of warm dust, and irregular brightness variations, all revealed by mid-infrared spectra. (4/6)

The environment surrounding a star changes as it ages, beginning with a juvenile, gas-rich protoplanetary disk where forming planets can reside, before evolving to a gas-poor debris disk. (2/6)

#NASARoman’s fine-guidance system, which allows the observatory to lock very steadily onto its targets during observations, passed a spate of tests from Sept. 15 to 21. Then on Sept. 22, the mission’s Coronagraph Instrument opened its eyes to cosmic light for the very first time.
