Meghan Jones

Hey! I’m Meghan, a lifelong artist; painter and drawer. The deep ocean has my heart and I adore painting unusual critters you don’t usually hear about ❤️ I’m contracted for writing and illustrating a deep ocean children’s book releasing in 2026. I also use deep ocean images in my personal work.

“Radiant Cornucopia” 24x36 acrylic on canvas, so much love for the Alaskan deep sea- this painting is currently on display in Spokane, Washington, and will be traveling to Newport Oregon this summer 🐡🦑 #deepsea #deepseacreatures #sciart #scienceartist #deepseasponges #deepseaart

Another piece that will be shown in Spokane WA next month, titled Snailfish Cupcake this 20x16 acrylic on canvas shows us a baby snailfish using a closed anemone for shelter from the current- cutie 🥰 #deepsea #deepseacreatures #deepseaart #scienceart 🦑🐡 @unseenocean.bsky.social

If you’re in or around Spokane WA next month we would love to see you at our show opening! #deepsea #deepseacreatures #sciart @unseenocean.bsky.social #art #marinebiology 🐡🦑

Hey friends! It’s been a hot second since I posted, I blame my creative drive that paces inside like a tiger and says “paint, never stop, nothing else is quite as important”. Here is another finished painting for my shows with the @unseenocean.bsky.social #deepsea #deepseacreatures 🦑🐡 #sciart #ocean

Yeah baby!! Will we see you at the opening on Friday?

Ooooo yeah, one more piece for our upcoming show in Juneau Alaska! A deep-sea octopus, titled “Living the Kaleidoscope Life” this 16x20” acrylic on canvas is based on deep sea footage taken by NOAA off the coast of Alaska in 2023 #deepsea #deepseacreatures #octopus 🦑🐡 #sciart #womenartists #painting

Not long now! Just under two weeks until our show opening in Juneau Alaska- will we see you there? #deepsea #sciart #womeninstem #womenartists #alaska 🦑🐡 #artshow

I’m back to share what I’ve been working on for the @unseenocean.bsky.social collective! Here we have the noble Blob sculpin, not the hot melted mess in the most famous blobfish photo, but a true and beautiful deep-sea beauty! #deepsea #deepseacreatures #blobfish #acrylicpainting #art 🐡🦑

One more painting for the @unseenocean.bsky.social shows completed! Titled “Nibbles and Cuddles” this 24x24” acrylic on canvas is a Chondrocladia carnivorous sponge, several varieties of brittle stars, and even a little rainbow polychaete too! #deepsea #deepseacreatures #deepocean 🐡🦑 #acrylicpainter

Getting closer and closer on this one, almost to the details stage where everything really snaps into place. This piece is for shows with the @unseenocean.bsky.social #deepsea #deepseacreatures #deepocean #deepseaart 🐡🦑 #art #acryliconcanvas #brittlestars

Friends- this carnivorous sponge is basically the COOLEST thing ever! Semi-transparent bulbous knobs, and totally covered in brittle stars *swoon* def new boyfriend material. Oh and I started another painting 😁 #deepsea #deepseacreatures 🐡🦑 #deepseaart #unseenocean #art #acryliconcanvas

It’s been a crazy family health crisis kind of month, but I finally made it back into the studio to finish up this 24x36” acrylic on canvas painting titled ‘Huggies and Snackies’. A beautiful stalked carnivorous sponge is joined by pink brittle stars and a golden crinoid. Cuties 😍 #deepsea 🐡🦑 #art

Loved this episode!

Wellllll look who has some associates! Got these adorable brittle stars onto the sponge this week, besties at the bottom just hugging and snacking! #deepsea #deepseacreatures #deepocean 🐡🦑 #painting #acrylicpainting #brittlestar #carnivorousponge

Working away on this #deepsea carnivorous sponge, crinoid and brittle star painting. It’s getting there, probably 75% done now, adding all the details and rainbow colors is my fav part! #deepseacreatures #coldwatersponges 🐡🦑 #invertebrates #acrylicpainting #marinebiology #art #painting #artist

On to the next painting! Needed a larger canvas for this dramatic stalked glass sponge, oooo she’s already pretty! Just working in some of the background layers today. This is more work for the @unseenocean.bsky.social events in Juneau and Spokane #deepsea #deepseacreatures #acrylicpainting 🐡🦑 #art

Deep Sea Anemone from the Southern Ocean- many thanks to @deepseauwa.bsky.social for the photo reference! I love the white/translucent deep sea critters: basically an open invitation for your girl to find out what color it COULD be! #deepsea #deepseacreatures #art #anemone 🐡🦑

And finished! How many shrimp can you find? If you’re headed to the Swedish Biodiversity Symposium in October then keep and eye out for this painting among other artworks by the @unseenocean.bsky.social #deepsea #deepseacreatures 🐡🦑 #coldwatercoral #acrylicpainting #art #scicomm

Hey @flyingtrilobite.com can @unseenocean.bsky.social be added to the #sciart feed?

My fav part of painting these deep-sea coral and sponge gardens is the feeling of discovery- today it’s finding a shrimp and a sneaky hiding fish in the cup corals 😍😍😍 make sure to check out @unseenocean.bsky.social for more great #sciart for our upcoming art shows and events! #deepsea 🦑 #painting

Finished! Shrimp and Decorator Crab buddies in a big beautiful sponge. If you look close you can see that the shrimp is expecting some little shrimplings with eggs in her belly. This painting is for @unseenocean.bsky.social shows in 2025-2026 #deepsea #deepseacreatures 🐡🦑 #deepocean #marinebiology

Beautiful little decorator crab coming to life! As a true blue maximalist I’m so drawn to these little guys covered in their excessive disguises- load it on, then load on more, then MORE AND MORE AND MORE! 😆 #deepsea #deepseacreatures #deepocean #decoratorcrab #acrylicpainting #art 🐡🦑

Shrimp Friends! Finished up this cold-water coral community painting of two adorable shrimp friends in their adjoining homes, I bet they hold hands when the camera moves away 🥹 🦐 #deepsea #deepseacreatures #unseenoceancollective 🐡🦑 #acrylic #art #painting #biology #deepocean

I’ve started a new project; I’m doing a series based on cold water corals from a coral and sponge garden found off the coast of Alaska in 2023. First up is a community of organisms- sponges, corals, fish, shrimp, a look-and-find just packed with texture and color! 🐡🦑 #deepsea #deepseacreatures
