For the past 30 years I've helped admin a handful of Linux boxes exposed to the net for hosting personal, family, and non-profit projects. Scrambling atm to convert all sites to static html so that we can sunset our last 2 servers. Struggling to keep 'em secure with all the recent vulnerabilities.

we don't talk about serendipity enough

3am mental connection: - fast travel in video games - creating things with AI - exclusively going outside for errands or to get somewhere else all of these reduce opportunities for serendipity, they prevent you from enjoying the now by recontextualizing your surroundings as a means to an end

I also think, and maybe this is controversial but it’s just my opinion, it’s ok to just take it on faith that other people are consciousness even as I demand proof that the computer is. I believe this is totally reasonable and normal.

Ridiculous NIMBYism. The Granite Curling Club doesn't own the parking lot, or the building, the city does. Plus the city has a plan where only ten parking spots would be lost. Half of the units in the coming building would be affordable units, with a nearly a third of them rent-geared-to-income.

The Granite Curling Club has filed a new court action asking a judge to review and quash City of Winnipeg decisions on a controversial project that would construct a 110-unit housing complex on its parking lot — and to issue an injunction stopping work for now.

Last night I hacked at $70 digital photo frame (using adb over usb) and converted it to a general purpose touchscreen tablet. Next I'll be turning it into a fun "what's playing" screen and controller for music streaming. Here's the frame I bought: www.amazon.ca/dp/B0H4T8HX9K

Love the concept of "weird machines"!

The boom in Linux CVEs lately should get you thinking.

Surely, given a finite codebase, there are also a finite number of bugs / unintended behavior, thus, a finite amount of vulnerabilities. Theoretically, a “solvable” problem. Right?

 Well…not at all actually.

Heads up for my #gamedev students (and other game enjoyers): 50 unique, well-crafted games to study and play. Retro-inspired games of different genres, different lengths, single and multiplayer, built using GameMaker. They all share a fictional origin story and a 32-colour palette.

Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies - “God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” ― Kurt Vonnegut

The Equal Earth map projection is an equal-area, pseudocylindrical global map projection introduced in 2018. The UN General Assembly now encourages the use of the Equal Earth projection, as it shows the relative sizes of landmasses more accurately than the standard Mercator projection.

Happy Friday! Had a lovely first week back teaching game dev and web dev at RRC Polytech. (View from the Assiniboine footbridge on my bike ride home.)

I think these so-called “jailbreaks” I was doing 3 years ago are really instructive on what is still going on today with things like the HF hack. The central pathology is, I believe, largely the same.
