Aletsch Glacier 2021 | 2026 Over these 5 years, it has lost 25 m in thickness at Konkordiaplatz (2900 m asl) 🧊🔥 And likely more than 50 m over the section shown here (1800-2200 m asl) 😱 All this melting is entirely caused by human activity! 🏭

How IGN maps take into account the changes affecting high-altitude mountain areas in the latest editions? 🗺️ 🔥 Examples: - Change for ‘Former glacier of...’ (in black font) - Depiction of morphogenic changes following recent extreme events (e.g. La Bérarde) 1/

The magnetic granite walls of the Sciora Group (3,274 m) from Soglio this evening! 🤩 This glacial valley was the scene of one of the largest disasters in Alpine history! 😱 3M m3 of rocks fell from Piz Cengalo, swept down the glacier and partially buried the village of Bondo in Aug. 2017! 🌊🔥

A few years ago, setting foot on the Aletsch Glacier felt like setting out to sea! 🧊🌊 The gigantic crevasses required particular care to find one’s bearings and find one’s way back 🤔 For the first time this year, I didn’t feel that way. The sea is now calm. Before it disappears. 📷 S. Guillet

Has anthropogenic warming prevented the next glacial cycle? 🧊🔥 Yes, it has. After shrinking throughout much of the early-/mid-Holocene, the LIS began to grow again around 2 ka, but then began shrinking once more around 1960 due to anthropogenic greenhouse forcing! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

A lake at 4,000 metres? 🏔️💧 What seems unimaginable became a reality this summer at the Allalinhorn (4,027 m) above Saas Fee 🔥 Between 1 May and 30 September, the 0°C isotherm lay above 4,000 m for more than half the time (79 out of 152 days)! 🌡️ Insane. 📷 Patrick Gasser

Despite 'suboptimal' conditions (snowcover) I managed to find one decent sample at Zmutt Glacier today! 🧊🌲💍 Cherry on the cake, it has bark, the Holy Graal of tree ring dating! 🤍 And below the Matterhorn!! 🏔

Another day Anothe ice cave! 🧊🔥 Zmutt Glacier has retreated so much that this is the new ice portal! Matterhorn at the background (not visible, just to the right) 🏔

Fortunate to have found this larch subfossil log near Gorner Glacier front yesterday! 🌲🧊 It will enable us to learn more about past Holocene warm periods 📈🌡️ Just 15 days left to help me funding this ongoing research and current fieldwork by purchasing subfossil wood: wemakeit.com/projects/gla...

Crime against Nature! 🤬 2 days ago Pitztaler Gletscher ski resort literally destroyed the front of the Mittelbergferner (2nd largest in Tirol) to build emergency exit slope for winter How much longer will (very) short-term economic interests continue to lead to such crimes? Boycott. 📷 Glacionaut

All these trees were alive during Ötzi’s lifetime! 🏹 Mid-Holocene (5.4 to 5.0 ka) subfossil Pinus cembra collected few years back at an Alpine glacier! 🧊🔥 To help me collect more of these samples this year, you can buy other unique pieces of wood here: wemakeit.com/projects/gla... 🙏

More than 20°C today at Megeve (1,100 m)! 🥵 20°C like almost every day this October! 😲 20°C while average would be 9.5-12°C! 😱 ... and still no water! 💧 📷 and reflections by Sam Bee 🙏

We are advertising a Master 2 internship (5 months) starting end of January 2027! 📣 👇 If you want to dig into past Holocene glaciation in the Andes through cosmogenic dating and glaciological modeling, this is for you! 🏔️ 🧊 ⏱️ Work based in @cerege.bsky.social. Please apply before Nov. 5th!

Aneto and Aneto Glacier 2015 | 2026 Collapse of the ice continuum at the roof of the Pyrenees! 🧊🔥 (Main Aneto remaining ice body is right to this view) In coming years, we are moving towards complete de-icing of the region 💧 Future generations will enjoy a stone desert... 📷 Miquel Seu

To help me gather more evidence like this 👇 - and to acquire such a sample! - have a look here: wemakeit.com/projects/gla... ...and spread the word! 🙏

wemakeit.comGlacier Subfossil Wood 2026 – Crowdfunding on wemakeitWith your support, I will collect ancient wood from melting glaciers across the Alps (FR, CH, AT) to determine when these trees were alive and precisely measure glacier variations during the Holocene!

Just tree-ring dated this outer fragment of a Swiss stone pine log found at the front of a major Swiss glacier! 🌲💍🧊 460 rings over 10 cm! (= tree lifespan ~700 yrs!) 😲 This implies that the glacier was smaller than it is today between ~4.8 and 4.1 ka! 🔥 (...but not that it was warmer/today!) 🧐
