This is an excellent piece. I had actually written a long quote post but erased it because I knew it would stir up to much emotion in me. But I'm very grateful for people who advocate for children & hold huge admiration for people who are brave enough to call all of this out #SpéirGorm

My friend is in Tenerife at the mo, she loves hillwalking & climbing. Her and her family climbed Mount Teide yest. I'm really enjoying all the pics she is sending me and living vicariously through her. It looks beautiful.

I just got soaked, stupidly had no coat on had to collect a prescription & get some bread & milk & I have a cold/virus but I have to say there is nothing like being watered like a plant/flower to calm you down. Getting caught in the rain can be energising #SpéirGorm 💦

1/3 I'm so angry for so many reasons listening to #Liveline today. How r so many people missing the point here?! And do people not realise the damage that is done by not acknowledging that CSA exists & is perpetrated by ppl from across d spectrum of society & against children from all types of

2/3 families. Any demographic of person (not just grandparents) could have been inserted into this advert, I don't think the makers of this advert were willfully trying to offend grandparents. How has this conversation become so completely about the hurt feelings of adults & the ppl trying to

If it is a governmental position that a larger person should be able to impose themselves on a smaller person *regardless* of the smaller person's feelings, then that government is only for bullies & should be kicked out of office!

They might be ok with a hug at the end of a visit, but too overwhelmed or shy at the beginning. They might detest your perfume or even be allergic to it. They might be just testing the boundaries - working out if they can say no. They absolutely SHOULD be able to say no!

If a kid doesn't want your hug right now, it's not an accusation of sexual abuse, FFS! They might not have seen you for a while & be feeling shy. They could be tired, sick, grumpy, whatever. They might be going through a phase of thinking they're "too big" for hugs.

Consent is not about sex. Consent is about your body belonging to you & other people not having a right to touch you when you don't want to be touched. End of story!

I am a grandparent (step-grandparent, if you're all about the blood) in a fairly complicated family, who only gets to see kiddo fairly infrequently. Sometimes they want to hug & sometimes they don't & that's 100% up to them. Hugs are absolutely the right place to start consent education!

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

4/5 some ways even if it temporarily stung to feel rejected. Adults need to be adults here. I hope my view is not misunderstood. I am not against children having loving relationships with their grandparents (or any other family member of family friend) but if we really love our children we should

2/5 own potential hurt feelings than recognising children as human beings who have a right to agency over their own bodies. It's interesting to see how children are still viewed. Feeling able to say no to a hug (or any other type of contact) from someone you love, respect, admire or look up to is

3/5 really important because as we all know in some cases these are the very people children need to be protected from. We should allow children the space to develop their own intuition. Honestly if I offered a child a hug and they said no it would actually make me v happy, it would reassure me in

Just listening to Vincent Browne on Oliver Callan, it's refreshing to hear someone answer honestly when asked if they are good (or something to that effect) & for them to say no, it's almost ingrained into us to mask suffering to protect others. As an aside he is a v interesting man #SpéirGorm

Sorry I forgot the ALT text on the images they are the front and back cover of the book "Klara and the Sun" by Kazuo Ishiguro. The cover is orange and the front cover has a square in the middle filled with sky blue and what looks like the sun just moving out of the box.

Listened to this woman on Liveline a minute ago, the apology she got was not strong enough in my opinion. That was an appalling failure of care. #SpéirGorm RTE news: St James's Hospital apologises to pregnant woman for 'failings in its care' www.rte.ie/news/ireland...

Not funny that he has worn the same clothes but the story was funny, I think it's endearing that he is sentimental towards his clothes & not sure if it's a byproduct or intentional but he is sustainable too. Anyway I think he is great lol 😂 #SpéirGorm

Just saw that clip of Kevin Bacon talking about his clothes being shipped everywhere but to Ireland where he has been working. So funny & also endearing that he has worn the same clothes since the 90's imagine the planet we would have if we were all more KB! #SpéirGorm

Overheard a fantastic conversation on the Luas just now. Woman, late 40s, real dub, strikes up a conversation with a young one whose very glamorous, tan, nails, eyebrows etc. Turns out she's only 18. She then, in the nicest way, finds out if she finished school- she did. If she's working- she is.

I have a friend who has limited use of her hands & told me 1 of her pet peeves is drinking straws, paper ones disintegrate & metal ones taste metallic & heat up. Saw these glass ones in Dunnes today thought I'd share for any1 who they might benefit. Multicoloured €3, Christmas (sorry) €5 #SpéirGorm

Students from Palestine are more likely to be refused a visa than students from any other country. In 2025, Ireland refused 22 out of 164 Palestinian applications for long-stay study visas, a refusal rate of 13%. This year, 114 out of 138 applications have been refused, a refusal rate of 83%.

Drivetime is really really sad today ... cannot help but reflect on how vulnerable children are to violence, abuse and neglect. I think we all need to be advocates for all children because they really really need us to be #SpéirGorm
