Until now, this data was spread across ministries and agencies. Users can now explore the portfolio by: - Technology: renewables, power & storage, hydrogen, transport, energy efficiency and carbon capture - Funder and institution - Type of innovation: incremental or radical, product or process

(1/6) As India's energy transition continues to accelerate, a new set of questions emerge: how is India’s clean energy innovation ecosystem evolving, what are the strategic choices shaping public RD&D investments, and what could this mean for the country’s innovation trajectory?

(5/6) We also ask whether India should align with global RD&D trajectories or strategically invest in areas where it can create competitive advantages, with implications for India’s energy security, technological self-reliance, and global competitiveness.

(3/6) Alongside the report, we will also launch our public clean energy RD&D Tracker that provides a breakdown of publicly available clean energy investments and activities across technologies, institutions, and types of innovation. Watch this space for more information.

(4/6) Over the past months, we have looked at India’s public RD&D investments for three technologies: solar, green hydrogen and energy storage. Our findings indicate that the portfolio has focused on incremental innovation – improving existing technologies, adapting them and reducing costs.

(2/6) Our upcoming report examines India’s public clean energy RD&D investment landscape for renewable energy, battery storage, electric mobility, energy efficiency, and carbon capture, to assess whether public RD&D innovations align with its broader clean energy, industrial, and climate ambitions.

(1/4) India’s average temperature during 2015-2024 rose by 0.89°C above the 1901-30 baseline, which makes it important to understand how the changing heat exposure is impacting people & places, while also examining how emerging institutional and policy responses are shaping India’s heat resilience.

1/4 “Scrapping only counts if the vehicle is destroyed rather than moved across a state boundary…Otherwise, the problem is simply relocated.” Arunesh Karkun spoke to the Financial Express about the environmental issues surrounding end-of-life vehicles scrappage in India.

3/4 On ideas India could adopt to confront the environmental challenge of vehicular scrapping, he highlighted “collecting a recycling fee at first registration... crediting producer obligations on total material recovered, and targeting enforcement at vehicles measured to be high emitters.”

2/4 He pointed out that when it comes to emissions, how a vehicle is used matters more than when it was registered. He further emphasised how economic considerations ensure that consumers favour resale over scrappage and recovery, leading to a relocation of environmental costs.

Does India's electric vehicle ecosystem demonstrate a stuttering transition or a strategic reorientation? Our new issue brief examines India’s EV policy landscape, current state of domestic manufacturing & the strengths & limitations of its RD&D ecosystem. www.sustainablefutures.org/publication/...

There are many solutions, he adds, that are already widely used across hot developing countries, such as ceiling fans, windows that open and cross-ventilation, as well as strategies to reduce cumulative hours of heat exposure.

1/2 #Bonn ended with a familiar mix: negotiated compromises, lingering disagreements, and incremental progress. But beneath the small gains lie deeper rifts (over finance, trade, and implementation) that will define what's possible at #COP31 later this year.
