If you haven't read any of the old #Conan books then you are really missing out on some foundational Sword and Sorcery stories written by Robert E. Howard. #swordandsorcery Many great authors have read REH's works, including but not limited to: George R. R. Martin Robert Jordan Stephen King

The Wrathgar series by Charles Moffat is so MFing good too. I wish more people would read it so we can talk about the characters and what we think will happen to them later in the series.

Nice collection of Sword and Sorcery and what I am guessing is research materials.

And once again the sofa is covered with reference and inspiration. When I'm writing sword & sorcery, I find it inspiring just to have the Robert E. Howard books all around me. Keeps me in 'idea space'.

This looks cool as hell. I read the first Imaro book by Saunders a few years ago and enjoyed it. Nice sword and sorcery work and distinctly non-European.

I feel that this would be more interesting if we replaced MAGA with Wizards and Mages, and replaced Republicans with the Magocracy. Why? Because living in a fantasy world would be preferable to this bullshit. Also... Replace Billionaires with Dragons. Replace Congress with Progress. 😉

1500 years ago the Welsh King Owain Ddantgwyn died of his wounds after winning his final battle. He won every single battle during a 50+ year period & was so fierce he was known as Arth Ur (The Bear). In honour of him a Roman named their son Artorius & he too had a successful military career.

Actually knows how to fight. Gets injured regularly. Not a Mary Sue (or Gary Stu). Often resorts to outsmarting opponents. Isn't waiting around for a man to save her. Examples: Sarah Connor Okoye Ripley Motoko Kusanagi Furiosa Brienne of Tarth NOT She-Ra. She is too OP + doesn't get injured.

Dear #SwordandSorcery Authors: I want to see more femalecharacters who actually know how to fight. Make them realistic. Make them bad ass. I want the feminine equivalent of "Die Hard" and "Conan the Barbarian". Like a female version of Rocky Balboa, who isn't afraid to take hits & dish it out.

Sony has decided to focus on selling digital-only games that expire and cannot be resold or refunded when they expire. No surprise, many people are boycotting digital-only games. My wife and I got a refurbished #PS2 console today. Why? Because old PS2 games never expire. Including S&S games...

Ah, but for anyone who has studied Greek mythology... You will know that the original pronunciation of Zeus was Dzeus. Dzeus = Deus (God in Latin) Dzeus = Theós (θεός, God in Modern Greek). Ergo... Christians do believe in Dzeus. They just don't realize it is the same thing. #linguistics 🤔

I suspect that a lot of books fall into the #SwordandSaga subgenre, especially since it is the one that more closely resembles #DungeonsandDragons themed adventures that typically feature 4 to 6 main characters. Examples Conan the Barbarian - 1 or 2 The Crystal Shard - 5 Lord of the Rings - 8

Dear #FantasyAuthors... If your book was on a spectrum, how would you define it between these two essentially "polar opposites". Obviously you can mix the 2, a bit, but then it becomes more like an "Epic-Sword-and-Sorcery-esque" story. Maybe even a separate subgenre that needs a name?

In that case there's a book series you might enjoy that has a robot horse: The Warlock series by Christopher Stasheff. The author died in 2018, but you can still find his books being sold online or via used bookstores.

Well worth your time article taking a nuanced look at what is still, by far, the best Conan movie.

Reactor Magazine@reactorsff.bsky.social

1982's Conan the Barbarian is a movie about Arnold Schwarzenegger kicking ass and fighting snakes...but it also presents a far more thoughtful, sympathetic version of Conan than people realize. Let's talk beefy heroes, Thulsa Doom, and...feminism?
