These questions are really testing graph sketching of step functions. The definite integral is only there to make it a multiple choice answer

Today's TMUA warm-up question

Currently creating a workbook for A2 Differentiation and wondering at what point I'll give up ensuring every 'd' is non-italicised in equations... #lifestooshort

Just finished another TMUA session. Tried to convey that in a qn like this my mind juggles a combination of "this could be true so would need a proof" vs "this could be false so I need to construct a counterexample". Then try to pin down what the statements claim and what the constraint implies.

Also, thinking about what implicit assumptions we might make that aren't necessarily the case: eg these sequences need not be positive / monotonic etc

To help a couple of students who have joined us for Y13, I've had to pick out exactly how much of the Year 2 content we actually cover in Y12.

I've finally put together a blog about all the changes I've been making to the sequence in which we teach A Level Maths. Let me know if you have any thoughts or questions! sxpmaths.wordpress.com/2026/03/26/a... @tickyvanner.bsky.social @runningstitch314.bsky.social

In bonus #MathsToday I worked with a student preparing for TMUA - looking at 2023 Paper 2 questions on necessary / sufficient conditions in many contexts, plus advice on how not to be intimidated in questions like this one. Great fun!

Sometimes two wrongs do make a right.. just marking some work where a student has replaced sin²x with (1-cos x)² and then expanded that to 1-cos²x

Having a department clear-out and there are a lot of old books that we need to dispose of. Free to good homes if anyone is interested in any of them! (I can't deal with postage sorry, so would have to be Surrey, West Sussex or Portsmouth area to do a hand-over)

For anyone interested, I've uploaded one of our booklets for sharing (Unit 1 : Points and Lines) but this is still a work in progress to some extent! sxpmaths.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...

Another Ukrainian NMT question, in a similar vein to the last one I shared. Find the largest value of a such that the equation has a root.

For a bit more context, most of the questions feel like an overlap between GCSE and some of AS Maths. It is non-calc so there is some emphasis on knowing/manipulating exact values, eg matching the expressions on the left to the appropriate values on the right; or finding the area of this trapezium

The early questions include solving and simplifying (plus there's a little bit of probability / data; some 2D/3D geometry and properties of graphs/functions)

"Find the largest value of a such that this equation has no real roots." [With the war, Ukraine has moved to online school-leaving exams and this is a question from a Maths practice paper. It was multiple choice but I've only taken a screenshot of the question.]

In #MathsToday I did my favourite proof by contradiction lesson, using green and red balloons and a pin. Also focussed much more this time around on examples of negations and contradictions before diving into proofs. #ALeveLMaths

Basins of attraction for Newton-Raphson on a cubic. I'll try and remember how github works as a place to share these

And one for the trapezium rule. I'm at the stage now where I can type in a carefully phrased one-paragraph prompt and trust it to come up with the goods!

Another bit of AI coding this morning. This one for visualising Normal approx of a Binomial distribution. I like being able to specify exactly how I want it to function rather than making do and clunking around with pre-existing stuff. I just don't have a convenient place for public sharing 🫤

Stuck indoors on a rainy Saturday? Why not pop in an application to come and see what Hurtwood is all about!? Closing date is this Friday. (And then I'll stop re-posting this 😆)

Come and join my department! We're in the Surrey hills (commutable from Guildford, Dorking, Horsham and beyond). Looking for another mathematician to grow our team. Small classes, mostly A level Maths / FM, ice cream on tap.. what's not to like?! www.tes.com/jobs/vacancy...

Got the Sunday evening blues? Come and join my team and look forward to Mondays! A level focussed, free meals, no Saturday school, decent holidays.. what’s not to like?!

It's that time of year again - your annual reminder that if you're a Maths teacher and looking for suitable resources for your classes across KS3 to KS5 then do check out www.draustinmaths.com. The site is five years old this week 🎉🎉 and in that time it's amassed over 1000 resources! 1/3
