The burned tips of trees and an interesting sky, near Fort McMurray AB. There were significant fires there in 2016. The ‘scarring’ goes right into the city at spots. Nature heals but it takes time. #photography #Alberta #forestfires

A humble request: would #journalists please stop using the word #bromance? A) it’s not a word and B) it’s almost always used lightly to describe something that is very serious. For instance ‘Putin and Trump’s bromance’. Oy! Call it what it really is, please. #endrant

This was from a series where I put Saran Wrap on the lens. It was four years ago this month, a quiet winter having just moved to a new city. When I look now with the benefit of hindsight I sort of see a cocoon. #art #photography

Here’s another thing to love about Montreal. The city (and other industrial cities like it) contain layers of economic activity that combine in unique ways. This large freight train goes through the heart of Old Montreal, one of the city’s prime tourist destinations. #montreal #photography #trains

It’s pretty amazing that this view - dropping prices on our ev’s, or using China to totally transform our transportation energy consumption - gets absolutely no airing except from my buddy Vince. I mean, shouldn’t we at least be debating this? We get cheap everything else from China …

We're blocking imports of cheaper EVs into North America but somehow China's the bad guy? How about dropping the price on North American EVs instead?

I know it’s cliche to say this, but we could choose to make machines that clean up pollution (or to help with any number of ills), but we choose to make machines that make ‘art’ so then artists lose livelihood. It’s very discouraging.

When in New York, we went to the opera. I’ve loved opera for many years but had only seen four live performances. This was my fifth. At opening, an organizer let the audience know that the soprano Angela Meade was feeling unwell but would sing anyway. 1/5

Simone Weil, the French philosopher, explored the effort to get beyond one’s ego. A friend asked: what does that mean, what exists beyond your ego? I’d add: how do you get there? The sun glints from behind a dark building in late autumn, the singer gives everything and shines. 5/5 #philosophy

The aria came over us like a chill wind, a flock of birds, a rising sun, a plaintive cry to which you could only respond: of course I’ll help you. I yelped in spite of myself, and apologized. The 3800 people applauded for more than a minute. Hawkins stood on the stage, soaking it in. Her debut. 4/5

The experience was unsettling … illness, the high stakes of delivering to this audience in this storied place. Leah Hawkins stepped into her role tentatively at first, but by the aria in act 3, she had warmed up. She did something that I can only assume is why people continue to go the opera. 3/5

At opening, an organizer let the audience know that the soprano Angela Meade was feeling unwell but would sing anyway. At intermission we were told Meade was to be replaced by Leah Hawkins. The announcer told us the tenor was now feeling unwell too. #photography #sonya7 #newyorkcity #metopera 2/5
