www.goodreads.com/review/show/... I ended up writing far far too many words about this book but without it being a coherent essay. I felt it was very strangely defensive of Petain the person yet I can't imagine the author is actually a Petainist. strange book

reading a book about the trial of Petain and it feels like he has to constantly insert jabs against everybody against petain and it's really bizarre. I can't imagine he is a petainist but so many of the jabs are petty nonsense

eg this sentence, which is just one example "His enormous girth reflected his complete identification with the French city most identified with gastronomic excess: Herriot was the provincial Republic made flesh.". wtf? he's fat and therefore decadent and representative of the 3rd Republic???

I often get like this reading history books... I feel so often even books theoretically written from a left wing perspective (or at least a "liberal" one) find the right wing more exciting, sympathetic protagonists as opposed to the boring left wing

was at a thing where there was a tree where children put up their wishes and one was "I wish to play rollercoaster Tycoon forever" like I'm so glad it's still a game children love 🥺

reading a book on the trial of Petain and there's a bit where him and a bunch of other fascist french collaborators have been taken to a rural German castle and a new collaborator "government" has been set up that has 0 power and an audience of just the local exiles

but they're doing stuff like publishing 2 daily newspapers (because of multiple factions) each of which acts like the official voice of France and publishes things as if they're still running it like talking about the operas in Paris etc

it's funny seeing the BBC reporting even on things like the Alberta separatism referendum, where 76% voted to remain (sort of), and it's still clearly reported like it's a tragic loss with the sympathy 100% with the separatists. cause that's the far right cause lol

car brain is so terrifying, any time there's a post about someone driving dangerously and hurting/killing someone there'll always be hundreds of comments ranging from "it's the victims fault" to "actually it's awesome, as a driver, to murder people. they deserve it". + complaints about speed cameras

just unfollowed someone who otherwise just posts about transit stuff cause she used the word goyslop and then defended it by claiming she was "diluting" the meaning by supposedly using it non harmfully?? like fuck offff

there are a lot of far right terms that get used in culturally-leftish spaces but that one is always incredibly upsetting because of how it smuggles an entire nazi (literally) worldview into the conversation. it's a wedge for the most horrific shit. you'd want to believe a trans woman knew better

the extent of gender polarisation in elections where in a lot of places women are voting 10-20 points more for the more left wing parties is fascinating to me cause I think it's a relatively recent phenomenon?

for the UK version: latest yougov poll has reform at 28% of men and 17% of women, restore 4 to 2. conservatives it's 21 to 24. greens 7 to 12, labour 25-28, lib dems 10-12. so the left to slightly less right wing parties are up 10 points among women

I like the idea that "pigeons to the feet" is the ultimate cure, the thing you break out when all else fails. it's very clever, but also very dangerous

Samuel Pepys@samuelpepys.bsky.social

It seems she was so ill as to be shaved and pidgeons put to her feet, and to have the extreme unction given her by the priests, who were so long about it that the doctors were angry.

in the same thread someone brought up "back on somethingawful this would be called e/n because it means everything to you and nothing to me" and I'm like woah am I back in 2004

this is such a minor example of computer history baggage because it's purely just the table name but it's always funny how something gets embedded because before public release someone's like "eh too much effort to change now" and we're stuck with it
