I was taught in grad school that scientists should have 3 versions of talks about their work ready: a 30 second “elevator pitch,” a 12 minute conference length talk, and a 40 minute seminar length talk. I think we should also have a short version aimed at non-scientists.

While the smallmouth and largemouth bass are probably the most well-known of the black basses, there are several other cool species like the Suwannee and Guadalupe bass. And we're learning new things about black bass diversity all the time (see: news.yale.edu/2022/06/06/r...) #25DaysofFishmas

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass…and 17 other species of black bass?! 🤯 Yup! And almost all of them are of conservation concern within their native streams of the southeastern USA. #BlackBassDiversity #Fishsci doi.org/10.1002/fsh....

Some limitations - always wave THOSE around, marketing tells me: Sharing research via shortlinks (like bitly) is NOT tracked on Bluesky atm. For this to happen the service has to make a change first (we're chatting with them so don't all @ them about it.) Use the DOI or direct link and you're good.

There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research. A Place of Joy.

🎶Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Fish nipping at your nose 🎶 Day 3’s #Fishmas feature is a species that wouldn’t be out of place at the North Pole! The Northern Pike (Esox lucius), also known in Canada as jackfish, is a popular catch across the #GreatLakes and beyond #25DaysofFishmas

In my academic career, there are a few things that I will never grow tired of. One is seeing an email from a journal editor with the notice “final decision: accepted.” The culmination of years of field work, data analyses, and revisions! Will be sharing more on this one soon!!!

I'm heading to the Caribbean tomorrow for a trip in collaboration with a team from the Smithsonian, so get ready for a lot of Caribbean reef fish pictures coming your way! Will share more details when I get there! #fishmas

Have a holly, jolly (roger) #Fishmas! ☠️🐟 Ahoy from the Pirate Perch (Aphredoderus sayanus), kicking off the first day of #GreatLakes #25DaysofFishmas! This fish is secretive, nocturnal, and has a very… unique anatomy - and it's the answer to this week's #SundayFishSketch mystery theme!

I don’t quite yet have the same reach on here as I did on Twitter, so I’m going to start a new fish game called #EtymologyEpithet, where I explain the etymology (the meaning behind a name) for all of the fishes I’ve described, starting with Cirrhilabrus isosceles, the Pintail Fairywrasse.

Spending a month on Bluesky has created a whole new model of a fight we need to be having right now. Not liberal vs. conservative or whatever, but respect vs manipulation. I am tired of being manipulated everywhere I go. That’s why I like it here, I feel like I’m in charge for once.
