You're gone. It still seems unreal and yet all too real sometimes. Our paths diverged, occasionally crossing at random intervals, but I knew you were there as I was for you. I didn't get to say goodbye and it still hurts. I see you out of my eye's corner and half speak, mistaken. I miss you.

The youngest son and I found a recipe for a Nestle Quick copycat. He thought the final product was worthy to keep On a side note, if you swap the ratios for sugar and unsweetened cocoa you get a dark chocolate version.

I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...

whatever.scalzi.comAnother Reason Not to Use “AI” For Your WritingBack in February I did a long post about “AI” and why I wouldn’t use it for my own writing, and one of the reasons I gave was “the fact that ‘AI’-generated text …

3rd line from the bottom in the image linked. I was also surprised to find this might not be a universal usage with "sheer gall", "very gall", and "absolute gall" making appearances.

The Pentagon is withholding causality and hit numbers. The CDC is withholding infection rates. The FDA is withholding information about food contamination. The EPA is withholding pollution and climate data. This corrupt administration is ALL about concealing the consequences of its incompetence.

When you check out (c'mon, you know you want to) you can adjust the contribution to send more to charity than to that money-grubbing burrito fiend @scalzi.com - PLUS! proceeds going to the author are also donated to charities sponsored by the Scalzi Foundation.

My understanding: tiktok was a site for sharing video clips and commenting on said clips. The US Govt was afeared China would be seeing those comments and made them sell out to us investors. Now, after the sale, tiktok has the feature of buying stuff directly in partnership with Venmo. Yes?

I've never had a tiktok account; my knowledge is from posts here or in the news over the last several years. Just seems like they were forced to sell so that it could be more monetized.

So, I'm growing out my beard. I think the last time I gave it a trim was mid-March, before I went on vacation to Canyonlands. I look ... scruffy. I am trying to make it to the end of August (birthday) but I may give in and shave it off before then. I've had a beard of some sort for ...3 years?

PSA: artists don't owe you ANYTHING. Artists create as they want and as the muse takes them but George Martin doesn't owe you the last Game of Thrones novel, Molly Turtle doesn't owe you a new album, and Robert Downey Jr. doesn't owe you a new Sherlock Holmes movie.

This is in response to several recent posts complaining their favorite author isn't producing as fast as they want. Unless you have a contract in hand with terms, artists don't owe you shit.

Sunset on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. We drove out to see the fireworks as the salt flats were one of the few locations statewide where it is currently legal. There were a few hundred people at the rest stop trying to set off their stuff without killing each other. Funny stuff.

May your celebrations have plentiful ale, potent pipe weed, and fireworks worthy of Mithrandrir himself. (Yes, I'm watching The Fellowship of the Ring, why do you ask?)

I found my cache of 45s which I thought were lost 30 years ago. Some of them were from my DJ years, some from my dad's time as a radio host. I need to clean them but ... I had to play one. Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", the original pressing.

My sister Maya and I were profoundly shaped by the influence of our mom, Ann Dunham. Giving Maya a preview of the Obama Presidential Center, including a new sculpture by Maya Lin dedicated to our mom’s memory, was truly special.

Little Miss is still very shy and reluctant to allow affection so her cuddling up on the bed with me and sleeping is a huge step for her! 3 feet away but it doesn't matter; she is relaxed and comfortable.

Also, because I am feeling a bit chatty, I've been training the kittens. First, three different sounds: hiss! when they need to stop it NOW (usually clawing something which shouldn't be clawed); second, three clicks when I want their attention;

and the whistle from M.A.S.H. when they are away and I have treats or some such. The other is to come, sit, and meow if they need me to attend to something elsewhere. I then get up and follow them to see what they need. Little Miss is still a bit reluctant but Leo and Maui relish in the power.

Turned my (now) 19 year old and his friend on to John Carpenter's The Thing tonight. I remember watching this movie with Stu and Greg in my mom's basement, the movie rented from Blockbuster, sitting on a set of scavenged movie theater seats, with BBQ and pilfered tequila.
