It’s #TCMParty’s 15th anniversary…who is bringing the Crystal? Thanks for watching along with us and much gratitude to everyone who’s been with us since the beginning on the other site. ^PG #TCMPartyBirthday

Calling all Myrna Loy fans! TCM's SotM lineup has been grand, but WHEN LADIES MEET and WIFE VS. SECRETARY, 2 of her best, are on too early. So how about we #TCMReschedule? Set your DVR now, then we can watch them together in a pop-up #TCMParty on Sunday, 11/1, during the umpteeth airing of GwtW.

"There's a lot to be said for making people laugh. Did you know that's all some people have? It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan." #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Sturges initially wanted to use a clip from a Charlie Chaplin film, however Chaplin denied the request. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

The prisoners are watching Disney’s PLAYFUL PLUTO (1934), a Mickey Mouse cartoon famous for Norm Ferguson’s flypaper sequence. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

This church scene treated blacks with more dignity than typical in a 1940s film, causing the Secretary of the NAACP to write a letter to Sturges thanking him. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

The wartime Office of Censorship blocked overseas export over the brutal chain-gang scenes, fearing enemy propaganda. Paramount refused to make the requested cuts. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Veronica Lake played The Girl again on LUX RADIO THEATRE in 1942—but this time her Sullivan was Ralph Bellamy! #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

This was the fourth of the eight films Sturges wrote and directed at Paramount. What a run of movies that was! #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Some of Sully’s travels stayed close to home: location filming included Canoga Park, San Marino, Castaic and Los Angeles. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Cinematographer John Seitz also shot DOUBLE INDEMNITY and SUNSET BOULEVARD. That man knew his way around comedy AND noir. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Barbara Stanwyck was considered for The Girl before Lake was cast; Frances Farmer also tested for the role. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Lake’s final film was a low-budget horror film FLESH FEAST (1970) where she played the lead role of a mad scientist. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Lake died on July 7, 1973, aged 50, of acute hepatitis. Reports also cite kidney failure. The end of her life was quite sad, she drifted between cheap NYC hotels and was arrested multiple times for public drunkenness. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

The shot of the derelicts running down to hop a freight train is one of my favorites…well done, Mr. Sturges. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Lake was six months pregnant when filming began. According to her autobiography, she delayed telling Sturges—and he was furious when he found out. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

McCrea and Lake would eventually work together again in RAMROD (1947) which was directed by Lake’s then husband Andre DeToth. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW (2/2)

McCrea turned down the lead in I MARRIED A WITCH (1942) because he didn’t want to work with Lake again after SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW (1/2)

One film reviewer said that Sturges’s films were a love-letter to the English language. And HOW! #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

The film title “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” was used as the title of the Coen brothers 2000 film. Yep, this is where they got the name. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

List of films that John L. Sullivan (McCrea’s character) directed. This was in the trivia contest at #TCMFF a few years ago: SO LONG, SARONG HEY, HEY IN THE HAYLOFT ANTS IN YOUR PLANTS OF 1939 #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Studio boss Mr. LeBrand’s name is an inside-Hollywood joke: it nods to real producer William LeBaron. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

Watch the opening conversation with the studio bosses: one shot lasts more than FOUR MINUTES. All that rapid-fire dialogue, and no cut! #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

The opening dedication to the people who made us laugh was originally planned for the END, spoken by McCrea as a voiceover. #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW

AFI ranked this #61 on its 2007 greatest American movies list, #39 among comedies, and #25 among inspiring films. That’s quite a range! #TCMParty #SullivansTravels ^JW
