Fungi season is finally here! Wet and mild weather have fungi popping up πŸ„ Our first (sold-out) foray of the season is this week in Danby, however we do have spaces on a foray event on 4th November, 10am at Fryupdale, North York Moors. If you would like to attend, please email info@neyedc.co.uk.

Please note that this is an informal foray as opposed to a structured training session, however there is still the opportunity to learn from other attendees πŸ”Ž

Mark and Becci took a trip to RAF Leconfield yesterday, meeting with MOD staff and the site's resident recorder to discuss the possibility of recognising the site, which has been protected from development & agricultural practices due to its security, as a Local Wildlife Site. An interesting trip!

The next blog in our Data Delivery series is now live on our website: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi... This blog concentrates on one of our key roles: informing local decisions. Read on to find out more about what we provide and why it's important! πŸ“

neyedc.org.ukNEYEDC's Data Delivery: Informing local decisions β€” neyedcThis is the third in a short blog series that looks at the core functions of a Local Environmental Records Centre. In this instalment, we’re exploring our role in local decision making.

We're looking forward to tomorrow's annual ALERC conference in Birmingham, which some of the NEYEDC team will be attending and presenting at. Always a great (and rare) chance to chat and connect with our LERC colleagues from all over the UK, in person ✨

It's fungi season once again, and waxcaps are starting to pop their fruiting bodies up. Whilst we're stepping back slightly this year with our NEYEDC Waxcaps project, we're still going to be out on forays and hosting partnership events. Surveyor Claire found these beauties over the weekend! πŸ„

Watch this space... We're working on updating our Local Wildlife Sites web pages, providing a comprehensive hub for all things local site related, including key information and FAQs for site landowners and information on how to suggest a candidate site. Keep you eyes peeled! www.neyedc.org.uk πŸ‘€

Some of the NEYEDC team had a fantastic day out recently at Brayton Barff wood, a Local Wildlife Site, where our surveyor Claire showed us the ropes in identifying and measuring ancient and veteran trees for addition to the Ancient Tree Inventory. They found some fantastic specimens (and fungi)! 🌳

We attended this year's Leeds University MSc field skills day last week, delivering a talk on making and sharing records alongside taxon experts from @ynuorg.bsky.social sharing their expertise in ID and specimen collection. It was great to chat to the new students and see their enthusiasm!

Over the last few months we've had Elizabeth, Language and Linguistic Science PhD student at the University of York, join us to investigate how place-names can strengthen the evidence base for Ancient Woodland designation, using her expertise on place-names in the medieval period. 1/2 🌳

As part of her placement, Elizabeth has written two blog posts, the first of which is live on our website: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi.... This first piece introduces us to the concept of place-names, where they come from, and how they relate to woodlands! 2/2

neyedc.org.ukWoodland place names - how do they work? β€” neyedcElizabeth, a PhD student in the department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York, is currently on placement with us investigating how place-names can strengthen the evidence bas...

We visited some fantastic sites as part of the rolling survey programme of Local Wildlife Sites this year. From navigating wet woodlands and military training sites to grasslands and windswept verges, our surveyors have worked tirelessly to represent each site fairly despite this year's drought!

The first of this year's YNU's Zoom Talks is this evening on a topic that is very relevant to Yorkshire - the Eurasian Beaver

Yorkshire Naturalists' Union@ynuorg.bsky.social

The YNU's Zoom talks have returned! As the days become shorter, why not spend the evening with fellow naturalists listening to talks on natural history? First up this year is Oliver Chambers-Smith from Beaver Trust. Full info on the website: πŸ—“οΈ www.ynu.org.uk/news-events/...

Another recent event of a busy summer! Some of our staff attended @rspb.bsky.social's Bempton Goes Wild 2026, acting as data hub for the event. There were a range of fantastic species seen and recorded - from this tiny new for 5k square Acorn Weevil to a mighty Minke Whale seen from the headlands 🌊

We attended Hassacarr Nature Reserve's activity day last week, just a stone's throw from our office in Dunnington. We set up some of NEYEDC's audio recording equipment, a camera trap, and moth traps to help survey the site. We had some very inquisitive visitors!

Coming up this weekend! 🌊

NEYEDC@teamneyedc.bsky.social

We're back at @rspb.bsky.social Bempton Goes Wild this year from 8th - 9th August, collating records for the site's annual count of species on the reserve ✏️ Come along and see bird ringing demonstrations, moth trapping, and more: events.rspb.org.uk/events/172131

Every year, NEYEDC supports small numbers of bioblitz events, acting as a data hub to collate and manage records made on the day. A few weeks ago we attended the Swinsty Reservoir bioblitz led by Yorkshire Water, along with our moth traps, to support the event πŸ”Ž

Our director Simon delivered the first of three guest keynote talks hosted by the HEY BaG group (Hull & East Yorkshire Biodiversity Action Group) this past Thursday, on our role as a LERC and how what we do can feed into the future aims of HEY BaG. Thanks to the group for inviting us!

This upcoming week is National Moth Week, 18th - 26th July! Here are some stunning specimens trapped recently by our staff and moth trapping volunteers from the past few years, displaying the amazing breadth of colour and form found in UK moths 😍 #mothsmatter

Our EIO Lucy has been hard at work analysing data for one of our local recorders, using records of farmland birds & crop type data to determine if species show crop preferences. We've got lots of data to work with! Images: heat map of survey records & transects (L - R: 2012, 2016, 2019 and 2025). πŸ¦β€β¬›

With the warmer weather starting up again, it's been a great opportunity for some local moth trapping. Our EDO Hannah has been trapping at Hassacarr Pond Nature Reserve, just by our offices in Dunnington, and caught these beauties this morning - Beautiful Hook-tip, Silver Y, and Smoky Wainscot πŸ’‘

NEYEDC will be attending and acting as the Data Hub for Yorkshire Water's upcoming Bioblitz at Swinsty Reservoir, taking place on Friday 24th - Saturday 25th July. Come along and join in recording at the site & join in with moth trap openings, guided walks, pond dipping, and more πŸ”Ž

Our resident Hassacarr Close Oystercatcher chick is now all grown up, and looking more and more like its parents every day. We're expecting any day now to be our final glimpse before it fledges and takes off into the wider world!

It may not be good for barbeques and beach trips, but grasslands and wetlands are flourishing at the moment in the wet weather. Last week our surveyor was lucky to visit two damp pasture sites near the Lancashire border which were awash with wildflowers and an impressive range of sedges! πŸ’§

Our resident chick is growing! In just a week, our office's young Oystercatcher is looking noticeably bigger and more like its parents, including in its distinctive beak. Hopefully it'll soon grow into its feet! The family are now venturing further around the office estate πŸ₯

Our local Oystercatcher pair chose an interesting place to nest this year...on a tiny patch of gravel right outside of our offices! Watching mum, dad, and their growing chick over the last few weeks has brought us a lot of joy - enjoy some pictures of the happy family! πŸͺΆπŸ₯

We're helping a local recorder complete a lovely piece of work at the moment, digitising & analysing records of birds and the crops they associated with on the Wolds, collected over 14yrs 🌽 Analysis will attempt to determine if species have a crop preference & which variables might influence this.
