Pulling back the curtain on the global labor force that supports AI systems has been a challenge researchers and advocates have worked on for years. That's why we built the Data Work Landscape, a resource that other researchers can utilize to answer additional questions about the industry.

Cunyan Ma, an undergraduate student at Brown University, did just that in “Where are the data workers behind AI?” Cunyan uses data from the Data Work Landscape combined with original data to visualize the locations of workers involved in data work.

42% of Californians aged 25-44 report using AI daily or near-daily—the most of any age group. 70% are weekly users. Meanwhile, half of 18–24-year-olds describe themselves as very familiar with AI, more than any other age group.

OpenAI is trying to IPO, meaning your retirement could soon depend on a legally and ethically dubious company. How legally and ethically dubious?

A year ago, OpenAI struck a deal with the Attorneys General of California and Delaware that let it restructure as a public benefit corporation managed by a nonprofit on the condition that OpenAI put its nonprofit mission ahead of commercial pursuits.

NEXT TUESDAY: It’s time to cast your vote in the midterm elections! From the local to the federal level, your vote decides who speaks for your community. Being part of choosing who is in the room is also one way you can influence laws.

A year ago, OpenAI got the green light to restructure as a for-profit company, on the condition that its nonprofit mission would still come first. So how’d they do? We graded OpenAI on safety, governance, charitable grantmaking, and public advocacy. The overall grade: F OpenAIReportCard.com

Titled "Organizing, Policy, and Research for a Tech Workers’ Vision for AI," in the session, we previewed findings from a forthcoming report based on participatory action research with What We Will about how AI is impacting both employed and unemployed U.S. tech workers. Stay tuned for more!

More Californians use AI than ever, but that doesn’t mean they trust the tools or the people making them more than before—especially young Californians. Maybe it’s the shock of it all.

When many people imagine the AI data work industry, they may picture workers labeling images and text directly for Big Tech companies. But tech companies are far from the only ones relying on this labor. Manufacturing & Agriculture is the 3rd-largest industry represented in our Data Work Landscape.

Education shows up prominently too, and one relationship stands out: Stanford University has documented relationships with six different data work companies, more than any other university in our dataset.
