So, yes, this is a big problem at all levels now, and on a personal note I would like teachers to consider what they’re doing to students who spot a problem in an assignment but don’t yet trust their own judgment enough to be sure because they haven’t been taught.. and now clearly aren’t going to be

Quite apart from the substance of this the fact that Canada is now giving its legislation the same stupid Big Strong Patriot-type names as the US should tell you this isn’t going anywhere good

Ottawa is ramming through its Building Canada "Strong" Act. This Trumpian act would allow major projects like ports and pipelines to circumvent key parts of environmental laws that protect endangered species, critical habitats and frontline communities. Write your MP: https://dsfdn.org/3W9FiUa

Clever but not smart will be the death of us

But the moment deserves more than clever. And we are not talking about the obsolescence of writing as an abstract. We are talking about actively depriving people of access to participation in a democracy.

One of the annoying effects of AI as a subject in higher ed is how much it brings out the worst of academic-brain. Like, yes, writing is not essential to higher-order thinking; western imperialists imposed literacy as a weapon and deemed cultures lacking alphabetic writing as inferior. It’s true!

a total inability to function independently even in the most intimate aspects of one’s life (as in the most individualized aspects of one’s thought and expression) is a deeply weird thing to take pride in, and even if they’re lying most of the time, it’s a weird desire to impute to people at large

I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

next week, in the Chronicle of Higher Education: positive dissertation references to cheesecake are down 70% since The Use of Pleasure appeared in English, a new study shows. Positive references to capacollo up 30% in the same period. Does this explain the crisis of the humanities?

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to tailored suits and classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

I was a member of a faculty union that excluded governance questions because they aren’t about salary or working conditions, and I’ve been a member of a professional organization that can do nothing about jobs or governance because they aren’t about professional standards, and neither of these works

There are, it must be said, political questions (macro and micro) that divide the membership. But that is the nature of organizations of any size. Unfortunately, most of the forces shaping the end of the profession are colorably “political” too. Excluding politics means choosing not to address them.

Can you be a union that exclusively represents retirees from the job? Can you maintain professional standards in the absence of a profession? Some people are very definitely determined to find out.

I was a member of a faculty union that excluded governance questions because they aren’t about salary or working conditions, and I’ve been a member of a professional organization that can do nothing about jobs or governance because they aren’t about professional standards, and neither of these works

A common thread between the two that is probably worth thinking about about is that both were run by small cliques whose vision for the organization was rigorously “apolitical,” to the point of subverting their own constititions and treating their own memberships as their main antagonists.

also, if your mind was changed by learning that the Daughters of the Confederacy were behind so many of those "historic" monuments to slaveholders, you'll never guess who put up the Eagle's Nest

What unrestrained AI seems to offer more than anything—even the surveillance & targeting systems that are already in use to horrible effect—is the destruction of democratic processes & the erasure of responsibility for harm of any kind. A world of total elite impunity.
