The new NSF BIO funding opportunity (solicitation) is out, which replaces the DEB, IOS, and MCB solicitations. The BIO Core accepts proposals that cover the scientific topics associated with the legacy programs historically supported by BIO. BIO Core - NSF 26-517. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...
Other new notice of funding opportunities (solicitations) were released today in CISE, ENG, GEO, and MPS. www.nsf.gov/news/foundat...

“You cannot schedule the lizard’s gift, and you cannot rush the leukemia campaign.” True words from Jeff Coller. When the next lizard arrives with a gift, though, what we can do is recognize it faster. 🧪 unpaywalled: www.nytimes.com/2026/06/20/o...
Sam was a great colleague. I hope he is enjoying his retirement while still being an advocate for science.
Sam Scheiner accepts his @sse-evolution.bsky.social Lifetime Achievement Award by pulling up a slide packed with names of colleagues from his 26 years at NSF, and reminding us to thank federal agency staff and scientists who are still working to support research while going "through hell" #Evol2026

NSF PDs will be @sicb.bsky.social. Stop by booth 308 if you would like to sign up to chat with us or catch us in the conference center. Informal workshop and Q and A session, Sunday Jan 4th from 12:15 to 1:15 in B110/111. #SICB2026.
This is what work looks like these days. Interesting days at the NSF.
NSF - Forced reorg - POs down ~ 40% (DRP, most rotators not renewed, retirements) - Forced move (and we have to pack and clean) to a building with no furniture, little to no conference space for panels, inadequate 🛜, …) I personally love the boxes they gave us for packing. “Details matter” 🙃
The new Enabling Discovery through GEnomics (EDGE) Program page is posted. Please contact us at BIOEDGE@nsf.gov if you have questions. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Another day testing the limits of resilience. The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels. Now we aren’t allowed to have in person panels. The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.
Nice to hear Bill and Sam speaking about NSF.
In our most recent episode we talk with Bill Zamer and Sam Scheiner, two former BIO program officers at the NSF, about the recently proposed 56% budget cut to the NSF. 🎙️Listen now: bigbiology.substack.com/p/savensf-ep... #scicomm #science #sciencecommunication #SaveNSF #NSF
