After engaging in a campaign of retribution against his enemies within the federal government, President Trump is turning to those outside of it. On "The Daily," our reporter explains what that retribution has looked like for one law firm, and how it's impacting the entire legal profession.

The White House is touting that it is transparent, but much of what is known about what Elon Musk is doing to the federal government is via media reporting, not the administration explaining exactly what is happening and what the plan is.

At today’s press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made clear that when reference is made to deporting criminals, anyone who crossed the border illegally would fall into that category.

I just saw one major publication claim that no other modern president has done more in his first six days than Trump. But this is all by executive order — a number of which are being challenged in court, by Congress or, in the words of one judge, blatantly unconstitutional.

The order bars the government from "any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen" and orders an investigation into the Biden administration's actions.

If you Google "inauguration day," you're greeted with an animation of fireworks forming the shape of the American flag. Google has never done something like this for the inauguration, sources told me, out of fear of appearing partisan. But that's changed now, with Sergey and Sundar attending.

In the House chamber for the speaker vote, to take place before the swearing in of a new Congress. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), key holdout to Mike Johnson, is seated along the center aisle. It's about the same spot where Matt Gaetz sat when he held out on Kevin McCarthy two years ago.

Johnson doesn't have the votes on the first ballot to be reelected speaker, but the roll call has yet to be made official. Johnson now huddling on the floor with some of the holdouts.

Clapping from the Democratic side as it is announced that Matt Gaetz will not serve in the new Congress. He resigned from the last Congress, and now is hosting a show on One America News Network.

When public officials hold press conferences to provide updates to major tragedies, reporters are seeking more information on what happened. So the most important people at these press conferences are law enforcement, FBI, etc., not members of Congress.

Perhaps being overlooked that Wray’s resignation timing puts a career agent in charge until a successor is confirmed, where his firing (if upheld, as it likely would have been), would have left Trump a freer hand on interim choice.

Both of Trump’s new appointees — Brendan Carr at the FCC and Andrew Ferguson at the FTC — are going after NewsGuard, which rates news sites for their trustworthiness. Newsmax gets a low rating, and Carr and Ferguson each suggest that there is some kind of legal violation.

The argument is that because advertisers rely on NewsGuard for placement decisions, there is some kind of collusion. But NewsGuard has expressed concern over a government official using the powers of his office to try to benefit Newsmax. “Our journalism itself is speech protected by 1st Amendment.”

"Morning Joe" ratings fell from Monday to Tuesday, following announcement of meeting w/Donald Trump. Average was 770,000 on Monday, 680,000 on Tuesday, per Nielsen. We'll see if this is momentary --- morning news habits are usually pretty solid.

The incoming FCC chairman issued a clear warning to broadcasters overnight that they would be held to their “public interest” obligations. He didn’t specify what those are, but Brendan Carr has not pushed back on Trump’s threats against CBS and ABC over their news coverage.

You are up to date.
