I realized I had versions of this with my daughter. How to ignore adults on the bus that felt questionable. Don't look at them, don't smile. Nothing to show you're vulnerable or willing to help. Stay near the bus driver. I didn't forbid her from taking the most questionable route.

I wanted her to tell me and not hide what she was doing. I realized years later. Her learning to deal with some drunks and see prostitutes or drug deals on the streets helped her self-confidence. And increased her ability to deal with situations that came up in college. Our girls need this too.
