The timing tells its own story. In February, Chișinău proposed Romanian-language teaching in the region's Moldovan schools from September 1. Tiraspol refused. The flag order takes effect the same day. This is a counter-move in a battle over classrooms. 5/6

Why ritual, why now? Because everything else is failing. GDP down 18%, the gas subsidy gone, the population halved since 1989. When a regime can no longer pay its people, it drills its children. Flags are cheaper than pensions. Watch September 1. 6/6

The template is not local. Russia introduced weekly school flag ceremonies with the anthem in 2022, complete with an official handbook and a billion rubles for flags. Four years later, Tiraspol copies the Kremlin's playbook, ritual for ritual. 3/6

It fits a pattern. In 2024, using the word "Transnistria" became punishable by up to 15 days arrest. In 2026, fast-tracked Russian passports for adults, flag rituals for children. Language, citizenship, childhood. Three layers of the same re-anchoring strategy. #Pridnestrovje 4/6

The order was signed July 31 by Tiraspol's de facto education ministry. Selected pupils with "good results" will form flag detachments. Friday, the flag comes down. The stated goal is patriotism, discipline, civic belonging. In a state that does not legally exist. 2/6

The lesson of August 2008 is not about Georgia. It is about deterrence. Russia committed the aggression, but the West made it free of charge. Ukraine is paying that bill today, in blood. Impunity is not neutrality, it is an invitation. Never again means enforcement and consequences. 9/9

By 2022 the pattern was fully industrialized. Mass passportization in occupied Donbas from 2019. The same "protecting our citizens" pretext on the eve of the full-scale invasion. Every element was field-tested in Georgia while the West looked away. 7/9

The playbook is still running. Transnistria today mirrors pre-2008 Abkhazia: passports, "peacekeepers", a protection pretext aimed at Moldova. Hopefully the West have learned by now ... 8/9

And the West's response? Sarkozy brokered a "ceasefire" Russia never fully honored. Not a single sanction followed. NATO resumed its Russia Council in 2009. Washington offered a "reset". EU partnership talks restarted within months. The invader, Russias Putin, paid nothing. 5/9

Putin ran the experiment and read the result. Invade a neighbor, occupy its land, pay nothing. Six years later, the same playbook in Crimea and Donbas. Passports handed out, "protecting Russians and Russian speakers", denial, occupation. 2014 was 2008 with better preparation 6/9

This was no improvised response. Russia repaired the railway to move armor in July, massed the 58th Army behind the Roki Tunnel, flew journalists into Tskhinvali before the war "started", and evacuated over 20,000 civilians. You do not evacuate half a region by accident. 3/9

The playbook was tested in Georgia first. Russia handed out passports in Abkhazia and South Ossetia for years, then claimed to be "defending Russian citizens". Some 250,000 Georgians had already been ethnically cleansed from Abkhazia in 1992-94. More followed in 2008. 4/9

Replying to @terjehelland.bsky.social

The facts. Russia invaded on 7 August 2008, bombed Georgian cities, and stopped short of Tbilisi. 224 Georgian civilians and 169 soldiers were killed. Tens of thousands were displaced. Russia still occupies 20% of Georgia's internationally recognized territory today. 2/9

Whom does it protect in practice? A protester was fined 3,000 GEL for cursing Bidzina Ivanishvili. An exiled activist was fined 3,000 GEL for insulting his son Bera. A state unit under the human rights department now guards the feelings of the ruling family. 7/9

Then came jail. Journalist Vakho Sanaia joked on Facebook that people should stop calling two Georgian Dream politicians a rude word. Fined 6,000 GEL (2,000 EUR). He mocked the ruling, so Kimbarishvili's unit returned to court. 14 days in detention. 5/9 civil.ge/archives/745...

The unit also protects people who never asked. In June, Judge Zviad Tsekvava fined a citizen 2,000 GEL for a comment insulting Sanaia. Nobody told Sanaia, who rejected the ruling as an attack on free expression. Four weeks later the same judge jailed him. 6/9

The legal basis is a Georgian Dream amendment from February 2025 that made "insulting" a public official an administrative offence. Most charges are filed as petty hooliganism. Penalties reach 45 days of detention. Mocking a politician is now police business. 3/9

The output is industrial. In its first month the unit flagged 170 alleged violations and pushed 150 cases into court. Fines run from 1,500 to 6,000 GEL (500 to 2,000 E). Georgian Dream Courts now hear insult cases near daily. These are official figures, not opposition estimates. 4/9

The unit launched on 1 June 2026 inside the Interior Ministry's Dep. of Human Rights Protection. Ten staffers scan social media proactively. No victim and no complaint required. The unit alone decides what counts as an insult and sends the file to court. 2/9 oc-media.org/georgian-cou...

🇲🇩Yesterday I walked around Tiraspol, Moldova's second largest city, which Chișinău does not control. In the bookshop, portraits of Putin and Stalin hang side by side for sale. Price: 18 rubles 50. In a currency no country recognizes. A field report from Transnistria.🧵 1/12

Can Moldova's EU accession end this peacefully? I think yes. Cyprus proved membership is possible with an unresolved conflict. Transnistrians won't need to love the EU, just to follow their interests. 77% of exports already do. Peoples mind will follow. 12/12

Meanwhile, real leverage is shifting to Chișinău. The electricity keeping Tiraspol running now flows via Moldova and Romania. Exporting to the EU requires registering with Moldovan authorities. Moldovan tax and customs rules are moving in. Passports are symbols. This is power. 10/12

The people are voting differently: with their feet. From ~750,000 in 1989 to roughly 300,000 today. Those who remain hold Moldovan, Russian, Ukrainian passports side by side. Pragmatism, not ideology, is the region's real currency. 11/12

🇬🇪On a square in Tiraspol, three flags fly together: Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia. That is the complete list of entities recognizing each other. Two Russian-occupied regions of Georgia and their own. A club whose members only exist in each other's eyes. 8/12

Russia's answer to losing the economic lever: the May 15 decree fast-tracking Russian citizenship here. No residency, no language test. Same playbook as Donbas 2019, Abkhazia and South Ossetia 2025. When subsidies fail, re-anchor the population legally. 9/12

And the model is collapsing. GDP fell 18% in 2025. Industry down 30%. Russia's gas cutoff killed the subsidy the whole system ran on, and the war closed the Ukrainian border, half of the region's trade lifeline. But poster still promote My dear Transnistria. 6/12

Here is the paradox almost nobody mentions: nearly 77% of Transnistria's exports now go to the EU. The rhetoric points to Moscow. The invoices point to Brussels. Frozen conflicts thaw where the money flows. 7/12

The streets are a Soviet timescape: Lenin outside the House of Soviets, streets named for the October Revolution and Lenin, a T-34 by the church. But this is not nostalgia. It is deliberate identity politics: the symbols are the state's claim to exist. 4/12

The real power is not on the statues. It is a company: Sheriff, founded in 1993 by two ex-Soviet security officers. Supermarkets, fuel, telecom, media, the Kvint distillery, FC Sheriff. An estimated 60% of the economy. Investigators call it the "Sheriff Republic". 5/12

The basics. Transnistria broke away in a short war in 1992. No UN member recognizes it. Not even Russia, which runs it in all but name. Yet 1,500-2,000 Russian troops remain, plus Cobasna: ~20,000 tonnes of Soviet-era ammunition. Europe's largest unguarded question mark. 2/12

What non-recognition means in practice: no embassies. If something goes wrong, no consulate can reach you. Most Western governments advise against travel here, which typically voids your insurance. You enter entirely on your own risk. 3/12
