Close all downtown cores to personal motorized traffic (some exceptions, sure). Invest heavily in affordable and reliable transit solutions. Replace 50% or more of downtown roads with green space. Looking for some "Yes, and..." to make this better. "No, because..." doesn't cut it.

At some point in the future, I could see a sort of "data center" being an okay thing. During this age of "We have no idea how to optimise this, and make it anything other than an environmental nuke", building data centers is irresponsible and STUPID. This will all be obsolete in months. Then what?

I would imagine, if treated right, transporter technology (of the Star Trek variety) could end the need for doctors, engineers, manufacturing infrastructure. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, so bear with me. 1/?

Inside, we could start with a straight simulation of an Earth. That's, again, just for familiarity. No need to worry about artificial gravity, or radiation protection during space travel (except for the shielding on a hand-grenade-sized ship). 9/?

Reintegrating the memories of the copies likely would not be possible, since the pattern is still in motion, and timestamps need to be orderly for anything to work properly... But it's not like the created body has to be the same as our definition of human. 7/?

So... Store patterns for enhanced bodies specifically designed to gather data and house transporter patterns. They can look human for the sake of presenting that image, but no further resemblance is needed. All data streams back to a core where all of humanity has access to it. 8/?

All could start with the full population of Earth, but with the system remaining active, the numbers would grow. New technologies could develop, new generations living alongside old, and they could all develop independently and drift further apart. 5/?

If there were ever a need to physically manifest -- say, to interact physically with another sentient race -- it could be achieved, but any bodies would essentially be copies of the patterns. Get killed IRL? Lose a small amount of memory by making a new copy. 6/?

Could the problem be stated as "How can we store a static pattern which describes something defined by its aspects in constant interaction and motion?" Yes... But that begs the question "Does it have to be static?" 3/?

Eventually the question can come around to "Do we need to reconstitute these patterns at all?" Consider a ship the size of a hand grenade carrying more humans than ever existed, as well as all their works and knowledge. Hell, consider innumerable copies sent in different directions. 4/?

The key, and the limiting factor that often comes up on ST is storage space (for humans at least). Pattern buffers are transient, and degrade quickly, and... That seems like it would need to be one final engineering problem to solve. 2/?
