purdy presumably thinks that if you want to ride a bike and not die, the onus is entirely on you to just work harder to not die. GO GET ANOTHER JOB ABOUT IT, YOU LAZY BUM.

Suzanne Rent@suzannerent.bsky.social

Fillmore and Austin are having a back and forth on the “circles” everyone is going on bike lane debates. Coun. Trish Purdy said she won’t support the deferral either.

mayor andy fillmore wants to have the old picture of him riding a bike and eat it, too. mayor andy fillmore is unfamiliar with the old 'faster, cheaper, better' approach, and thinks so little of the taxpayers of the municipality that he thinks everyone will shut up if he puts some paint down.

Suzanne Rent@suzannerent.bsky.social

Mayor Andy Fillmore said he wants to complete the bike lane network as quickly as possible and with more savings. Fillmore said he’s voting against referring the reports to the committee.

oh, Terri, now you've reminded me about how Andy thinks it's reasonable to expect that cyclists are 'brave' as though that excuses making zero effort to keep them alive. ...now i'm mad again.

This is a child's mentality towards living in a country. If you want to do whatever you want whenever you want, go live in the woods of Alberta away from social services, community support, and healthcare. Absolutely immature nonsense.

every accusation is a confession from the gang who keep threatening annexation and actively funding and fomenting separatist sentiment in Alberta. can somebody walk this mistake of a man back to the grocery aisle where he was presumably dropping cans on the floor to demand a dent discount?

the absolute hubris to assume that they will build an all-knowing AI god, feeding the absolute batshit psychosis to put human lives and the fate of society in the hands of their own creation, since they and only they can create such perfection.

do you know how much good those $150MM alone could do? to set that amount of money on fire to spite everyone else so that you can continue to hoard more wealth that you will ever need is profoundly anti-social behaviour. billionaires shouldn't exist, full stop.

Robert Reich@rbreich.bsky.social

22 California billionaires have spent a combined $150 million so far to defeat Prop 40. By spending their fortunes trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, they're making the argument for a billionaire wealth tax more clearly and articulately than anyone else possibly could.

why aren't the same people who want trans women to stop existing because someone *might* get uncomfortable in a bathroom /some day/ expressing full-throated support of the actual human who was provably raped by a gang of cis men? ...could it be that they don't actually care to protect women at all?

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been following the attempts to smear the Jane Doe in the Cornell University gang rape case and redirect blame from the seven fraternity men onto her. As usual, this campaign is built on a mountain of lies and misogyny. spitfirenews.com/p/cornell-ja...

individual people make awful, heinous choices, and the ultimate fault is with the men who chose to assault Jane Doe. that said - the societal permission structures and double standards that enabled and encouraged them the whole way along run DEEP, and they are hard at work downplaying this horror.

"Why do we have to go right to she's a victim?" ...well, Megan, i'd start with the part where she was drugged and raped, that's where i'd start, you soulless fucking ghoul.

Megyn Kelly: "...this is probably a first for her. She's probably thrilled to be so admired because she clearly didn't grow up the incredibly beautiful one."

The woman who wants to cut services to the bone because taxes are too high, when presented with a strategy that honestly, would actually lower municipal taxes for many, goes instead with "fuck you, lazy bums, get another job". any way she looks at it, you lose.

Suzanne Rent@suzannerent.bsky.social

Trish Purdy voted against this but said she also understands how it affects new homeowners, including her son. Purdy said her son can get a second job or just work harder to pay his tax bills.

you don't get municipal services and programs, you don't get infrastructure and safe roads, because taxes are too high and people can't afford it, so we can't spend money on anything. but also, you aren't working hard enough and it's your fault you can't afford your tax bill.

at least she's just as callous towards her literal fucking son as she is to everyone in the municipality, JFC. she may have utterly terrible ideas, but at least she's consistent?

boy is she gonna be pissed when she finds out how much we spend on making sure cars have somewhere to idle behind each other.

sure is hard for the city to try to dispell anti-bike sentiment when it's being fomented from the mayor's office but hey, throw that on the pile of ways he's stepping on the municipality's dick.

Staff: holding Purdy’s face in their hands, making unwavering eye contact “It’s bad, Trish. It’s so bad. It’s so very, very bad and it isn’t good, ‘cause it’s bad.” Purdy: “…but you’ll tell us when it’s bad, right?”

this is an interesting exchange, and I think it says a lot about the american psyche. i think it's the false equivalence of 'theoretical exceptionally nice things which are available to certain individuals' with the actual conditions on the ground for all.

John Steinbeck once paraphrased Ronald Wright to say that "socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."

and that's borne out by how consistently americans will shoot themselves in the foot and work against their own current best interests to benefit and advantage a class of people who don't give a shit about them, but whose ranks they assume they will one day join. and i find that sad.

and that's the crux of it, isn't it? culturally, they've been conditioned to look out for number one, and to overemphasize what they feel they deserve, personally, individually. they've been trained to want less for others and to frame things as a zero sum, where a winner must stand over a loser.

as such, when presented with societies where the floor has been significantly raised, they dismiss, reject, and point to the fact that their ceilings are so high they might as well not exist. without, of course, acknowledging that they're still standing on a dirt floor.

but i do think it's interesting that when presented with actual, tangible examples of things that are being done well, at scale, to the benefit of all, the response is to downplay, reject, talk about high taxes in those places, and then argue that everything's great in the US. they're "free".

the kinds of things that get carted out as evidence, typically, are examples of aspirational privilege, and the kinds of perks and conditions that select individuals can attain through luck, money, and extraordinary achievement. it's toxically individualistic.

you know my position - american exceptionalism is a disease. it's fundamentally harmful to people who have been indoctrinated with it, and it causes them to harm and disregard everyone else. even the 'good guys' see the US as fundamentally superior and look down on the rest of the world.

i think this poster's response is partially coming from a place of - frankly - coping, and i get that humans have to find the joy in their daily lives lest they give up on those lives. i'm not arguing that people should spend all day ruminating on adversity and failure.

When the criminal justice system callously and repeatedly shows a woman that there's absolutely no help coming - and then dehumanizes her and disproportionately punishes her for finally defending herself and her children - that's patriarchal, state-sponsored violence.

predictable - weak-minded skidmarks pounce once someone is no longer able to speak for themselves to co-opt and re-purpose the goodwill that an absolute icon earned by being a woke, progressive queen, and try to shape it into some centrist, do-nothing hogwash. keep her name outta your mouth, bub.

This is not satire. This is a genuine post by a Queensland LNP state MP celebrating that he's "delivered" the removal of a public bench to "address antisocial behaviour".

the measure of human worth is not clothing or creed or income or skin colour or faith or neurotype or ability or sexual orientation or gender expression or eye colour or handedness. until I’m blue in the face: what you *do* is who you are. words, actions, accountability.

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.
