I would like to thank @timpratt.org for introducing me to the concept of emotional support knives. Also her latest(?) novel, The Jewel and the Comet, is a delightful romp that also feels like an authorial coming out party. In these times, it's the balm.

So, I'm fairly fluent in German, and I've been teaching math for nigh on 20 years, but it wasn't until TIL what the German word for derivative is.

There's this thing my students keep doing (over the years) that for tilted reference frames on free body diagrams, they tilt the body so gravity goes off at an angle rather than tilting the axes. Is this something they're finding on the internet? Is this standard practice? #iTeachPysics

I'm sure I remember BK spending decades paving the way for the current generation of fascists. Kind of disingenuous of him to try to point fingers now.

“Living through a global resurgence of fascism, the difficulty has proved to be not arguing against it, but convincing non-fascists that fascism’s adherents really mean it. That they believe what they are telling us they believe—and they will act accordingly.” www.liberalcurrents.com/fascists-rea...

My favorite two lines in this. The first uses dot products to find the component of v in the direction of a, the second simply reuses the first, but uses the perpendicular of a instead. It was one of those "I wonder if this will work right" things, and it totally did. Thanks #Desmos.

Watching the full game replay of the Thursday night game on #NFL+, and it's just all the left over clippings from the condensed game. The only plays you see are those from instant replay. I don't even think you can even blame AI for this enshitification.

Can't believe I misspelled #EduSky.

I've recently noted that a lot of my students are concerned about points, what might get marked down, or what they will get credit for. So much of our language in education is about the scoring system, and not mastery or proficiency. So, time to change my language (and thinking) again. #Edosky

A couple of years back, both my spouse and I decided to start degendering our language. It was less about making some point, and more about changing our thinking about our instead assumptions of gender. (I promise this is going somewhere #eduSky) (+)

There is a certain joy in addressing a newly hatched nonbinary student by their new name as they walk through the door and watching them do a happy dance all the way to their seat. #EduSky (Fuck TERFs)

This went much better than it had any right to. Watching the crowd while I presented AI research was like watching the audience at a horror movie. The parenting styles part caught a couple of people off guard. Principal came by and gave me a thumbs up.

Getting ready for back to school night. Rather than the usual regurgitation of my syllabus, I'm going to be focusing the majority of my time on the potential intellectual damage from using AI and the distinct differences between authoritative and authoritarian parenting. #EduSky

I still find it crazy that all the bullshit they said about drugs ruining your brain is actually true for generative AI, (down to the pushers giving you free samples to get you hooked) and anyojne with any power is just happily going along with it.

#EduSky: I've been teaching long enough that I've heard rigor used a lot, but haven't seen a good (rigorous?) definition. It seems to mean different things to different people, and that, to me, doesn't feel rigorous. Any help?

This is inspired by our district deciding to focus on "Cognitively Demanding Instruction" which, from all I can tell, is "It's more than rigor, because when people say they're doing rigor it's not enough." I brought up Cognitive Load Theory, which I do buy into, and was told this is something else.

Bet he jokes about having the N-word pass as well.

This may be true of others but I actually got express permission from the trans community to keep NYT games and recipes. I also have a news subscription, which is arguably worse, so I had to specifically send in a written request. Took 30 days but I got approved.

Trying to decide if I have the fortitude to math a pattern for a Jessica Rabbit dress in my size (because I know for sure I can't buy one.) Also, I'm afrait of having to sew sequins. Could probably get away with satin, though.

If you've got no idea what that is, it's southern German braised red cabbage, usually with a sweetish/sour flavor. It's lowish in carbs, (ish because apples and a spoonful of brown sugar).

Teacher horror story from my first school. My second year, a teacher down the hall would have to bring a change in clothes every day because her third period (right after nutrition) would collect these so that they could bite the corners off and hose her down to soaking wet. (+) #Edusky

Admin would come in and help manage the kids for a day, and the next day they'd be right back at it. I had a rough first year there, but nothing like that. For all that, once I learned how to manage a classroom, I really enjoyed teaching at that school.
