🌦️The UK is increasingly breaking heat and rainfall records due to the climate emergency, the Met Office has warned.🌊There’s no doubt that our rivers will need to become more climate resilient to cope with these changes. 🧵⬇️

Ahead of World Sustainability Day, we’re celebrating rivers’ power to reconnect us with nature. But London’s rivers face growing threats from pollution, climate change and nature loss. 🧵⬇️

At Thames21, we’re working with communities and volunteers to protect rivers, wildlife and ecosystems for a healthier, more resilient Thames Basin. ⬇️

🌿🎃 Get your hands dirty for a good cause this Halloween! ➡️Join us this Saturday, 31st Oct, for a volunteering session by the Thames. We’ll be working on repairing Chiswick Eyot’s banks to stop further erosion and improve habitat for wildlife. 🔗https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/VinmEs4f3mkleU1bGYB1

🍂 Fancy swapping the sofa for somewhere greener and bluer this autumn? 🌿Join a Thames21 community volunteering event to help restore rivers, protect wildlife and build greener, healthier communities. Get outdoors, and meet new people!➡️https://www.thames21.org.uk/events/🌱💙

Rivers must be at the heart of water reform. The Clean Water Bill is expected to begin its journey through Parliament in late 2026. We’re calling for stronger protections, community-led monitoring and investment in nature-based solutions to secure healthier rivers.⬇️🧵

Water companies must invest in vital infrastructure and pollution from all sources must be tackled. Healthy rivers are essential for biodiversity, thriving communities and climate and flood resilience.⬇️

Our team was delighted to recently join European project partners at SYMBIOREM’s final event in Brussels. SYMBIOREM is an EU-funded project aiming to develop sustainable environmental treatment technologies. ⬇️🧵

We shared insights from our collaborative work at the Gallions Lake floating treatment wetland and the Marsh Dykes in the Thamesmead catchment, SE London. Our discussions covered wetland performance and the fantastic contributions of volunteers.⬇️ 📸RichardHeald

A huge thank you to the entire SYMBIOREM team, our project partners and all the citizen scientists who have contributed to making this project a success. 🙌💚

📍Local to South East London? 🗓️Join us on the 28th October at the beautiful Foots Cray Meadows in Bexley to help manage the ponds that are part of the River Cray. 🌿💧We’ll be working inside and around the ponds, removing and managing vegetation. 🔗https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/63OYh1mJSdqPetirlRAQ

Really enjoyed visiting @thames21.bsky.social's Big Wet Wipe Count on the river Thames last Sunday. A citizen science project which has led to real change in parliament! 👇 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

There are solutions, but we need action. 💧 Water companies must invest more in infrastructure. ⚖️ Regulators must hold them to account. 🏛️ Government must introduce stronger laws to improve water quality and protect the health of our rivers.⬇️

Want to get hands-on and help protect the Thames? Join us on the foreshore by Hammersmith Bridge for our Autumn Big Wet Wipe Count, where we’ll be counting sewage-based wet wipes and gathering important evidence about pollution in our river. 🧵⬇️

But there’s still plenty of work to do. 🧤 Manufacturers need to provide genuinely plastic-free alternatives. 💧 Water companies must keep investing in sewage infrastructure, reduce reliance on sewage overflows and install more screens to stop wet wipes entering our rivers.⬇️

And now, there’s been a major step forward! 🎉 New UK rules will ban plastic-containing wet wipes in England from 2027.⬇️

Look and you will find. 👀 It’s amazing what wildlife can be spotted in urban river environments. Can you spot the moorhen here? As an environmental charity, Thames21 works to transform London and the Thames Basin into a healthier, more climate-resilient region, with rivers that everyone can enjoy.🧵⬇️

None of the city’s rivers are in good health, and the region faces increasing challenges from climate change, nature loss and rising social inequality. But solutions exist, and together we can make a difference. Come and join us in helping to protect your local river. 🧵⬇️

Get active and connect with nature at Thames Road Wetland!🌾 ➡️Join our next volunteering day on the 16th Oct. We’ll be carrying out vegetation management tasks to improve habitat for the unique species that call the wetland home. 🔗https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/0WCJmk9xkzaAmCNTk2TC #thames21

🌊💙 You don't need to live near a river to help protect one. Watch trail camera footage from 🌿 Withymead Nature Reserve on the River Thames, record what you spot 🐦💧🚯, and upload your observations via the #BigRiverWatch app. Big thanks to Mend The Gap. 📹https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex5QOXDYMiw

🌊🔬 A huge thank you to all our volunteers who took part in our first 'microplasticblitz' sampling day across the River Brent catchment! We collected water samples from hotspots along the River Brent and its tributaries to understand where microplastics are ending up.⬇️🧵

🌊🧤 Join our Big Wet Wipe Count! Help survey sewage-based wet wipes on the Thames foreshore by Hammersmith Bridge on Sunday 11 October, 10am–2pm. Come help track pollution and protect our river! 💧🌿https://www.thames21.org.uk/event/big-wet-wipe-count-autumn-2026/

🌊 From the River Thames foreshore, meet Ken. Ken could have been playing computer games or watching the latest film on Netflix, but instead, he chose to spend his time helping protect his local environment. We talked sewage-based waste, and misconnections. Watch full video below.🌿
