That Guy James

A ubiquitous theme in almost every tarot deck I researched is the moment of absolute destruction of The Tower. It made me wonder if there was something else that could be done. I focused on the moment after the kaboom; the path revealed by the storm. Kickstarter: ltltarot.com #tarot #thetower #boom

Human Intelligence: One of the not-so-secret weapons in my arsenal is the Texturelabs distortion plugin. Developed by Brady Erickson, this collection of action presets allows me to take razor sharp vector graphics and give them a warm, block printed feel. Kickstarter: ltltarot.com #tarot #photoshop

Being the suit of worldly possessions, the coins offered some unique opportunities to be much more literal. For example, on the five I was able to show losing or gaining wealth depending on the orientation of the card. Kickstarter: ltltarot.com #tarot #minorarcana #coins #pentacles #kickstarter

I originally wanted to do a custom symbol for every card in the minor arcana to reflect the their unique narratives. It was a good exercise, but in-situ the bespoke treatments became distracting. A universal icon for each suit worked much better. Kickstarter is live: ltltarot.com #tarot #arcana

Building each composition around the tree of life really pushed me as a designer. Seeking balance within an individual card, and the deck as a whole. Finding solutions that were appropriate to the narrative and the context within the cards suit. Kickstarter is live: ltltarot.com #tarot #treeoflife

I was blessed with a host of supporters as I worked on my tarot deck. Among them was Bob Ross, his videos whispering soft words of encouragement, happy accidents, and beating the devil out of that brush. Bob, this card is for you. Kickstarter is live: ltltarot.com #bobross #happylittletree #tarot

I studied Pamela Coleman Smith's tarot extensively as I was creating on my own. I wanted some of the cards in my deck to pay tribute to her work, like the Eight of Wands where I flipped the camera to ground level. Kickstarter is now live: www.kickstarter.com/projects/hit... #tarot #kickstarter

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ October: Necrodraconis I'd say this is the result of a childhood spent playing too much Castlevania but we all know that isn't possible... #castlevania #necro #gothicart #dragon #skeleton #artdeco

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ September: After the Storm Crows, swords, skulls... these are some of my favorite things. #crowart #sword #skullart #osr #darkart #graphicstyle #afterthestorm

I got this guy the week that freaking Skyrim came out in 2011. I only had enough money for one or the other and I chose the tablet. For over a decade it was the foundation of my digital art no matter where I was or what I was up to. Rest well, my friend; you've earned it. #wacom #tablet #farewell

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ August: Ice Dragon Thinking frosty thoughts and hoping you're keeping cool through these wild summer days. #icedragon #winter #frozen #dragon #fantasyart #osr #D&D #illustration #art

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ June: THE BURNINATOR I'm slowly correcting the terrible mistake of not having nearly enough dragons in my portfolio. So much majesty it might bite you in the face! #burnination #ThatchedRoofCottages #ConsummateVs #dragon #fantasyart #osr #D&D #illustration #art

Stumbled upon a logo I made for a podcast last year; I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this one. I only had an hour or so to make the design, but it still tickles my brain that I managed to do the North/South thing with the type lockup. #logodesign #graphcdesign #compass

Happy #solstice, y'all. ❤️

Y’all @thatguyjames.bsky.social and I have been married for 20 years. 💖

This was truly one of my dream assignments. It's so amazing to be able to come full circle and contribute to one of the beloved games I grew up with. And with such a talented group of artists as well. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this amazing deck! 🖤 #dnd #ravenloft #tarokka #tarot #art

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ June: @cataclysmarcade.bsky.social I've been working with a lovely group of humans to develop the look and feel for a new TCG with an unapologetically retro 80s vibe. I got to make a lot of art for this game, but my favorite part was all the #graffiti. #tcg #art

Praise Vector! We are already funded this morning for my new — FIRST! — TCG project Cataclysm Arcade which features a post-apocalyptic storyworld and is playable from a booster pack. (Plus you gotta see the animation) www.kickstarter.com/projects/cat...

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ May: The Song of Saint Starlight Several years in the making; words and art by me. Telling the story of an otherworldly Traveler who is summoned to help the people remember their love and restore the stars before it is too late. #book #art #star shorturl.at/Nqv48

@devdoodle.bsky.social He spent all day making this for you. It takes a long time to make a cupcake when you're just a silly little guy. Happy birthday!

I don't want to shoot videos I don't want to post tutorials I don't want to show my process I don't want to pour varnish I don't want to turn my canvas I don't want to record my screen I don't want to cultivate parasocial relationships I just want to make pictures and shitpost

I worked on a thing! I've been a Ravenloft fanboy going way back. Novels, supplements, the Spellfire cards 😱; of course I also had a Tarokka deck. Contributing to the new Tarokka was the best. I even had one of my cards selected for marketing: shorturl.at/H4jyF #ravenloft #dnd #rpg #tarokka #osr

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ April: Huginn and Muninn It's almost time for my first show of the year and I'm stoked to have my brand new series of Norse illustrations for their debut. Come find me at @oddmallpnw.bsky.social artist alley and say hi. #norseart #Huginn #Muninn #odin #valhalla

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ March: Goth Deco Stickers Spiky moody designs for spiky moody souls. Mixing in some of my beloved art deco like I do. All 6 sticker designs up on my site: james-merch.square.site/s/search?q=g... #goth #graphicdesign #biblicallyaccurate #lunar #skull #art #spikes

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ December: The Immigrant Song I'm currently working on a new series of artworks inspired by Norse mythology. While most of the images have roots in antiquity, I couldn't help making a tribute to one of the modern greats. #norse #viking #graphic #art #nordicart

@shivambhatt.bsky.social I've been enjoying my copy of APWOT 5 and I just read the article you contributed to about the Suikoden series. What a fantastic read. 🖤

Final show of the year for me and yes I did save the best for last. Oddmall this weekend at the Monroe Fairgrounds. Come on out and enjoy the work of one of the finest groups of artists I've ever had the pleasure of vending with. #oddmall #oddmallpnw #Creepsmas5!

Your monthly dose of new James Art™ October: Saint Schism It was an unexpected gift to find myself returning to this world after years away. Moving forward in a way that feels authentic to both past and present me is a real challenge, but worth the effort. I'm excited to know this story isn't over.

mailchi.mp/6d076212527a... Thanks to every person who helped out. Some timely matching from Trevor Project got our grand impact total over $100,000!!! How will we break this next year? The best way you can help right now is the ol' "like follow share!"

Our total raised this year is $81,700 for @trevorproject.bsky.social and @translifeline.org Thank you to EVERYONE who attended, supported, and participated with our creators this year. That will go to helping over 1500 youth in need!

One image that I really enjoyed working on for each month! April's Selection: Inky Cap This is my first piece of mushroom art and I really enjoyed learning about some of the myriad varieties out there. So much personality! #mushroom #art #mycoart #gothart #fungi #mycology #inkycap #illustration

You've seen the incredibly cool Logo ThatGuyJames.bsky.social put together for us But have you seen the amazing City’s Blessing token he made, combining the Rochester Skyline with our logo? James will be selling these at Commander Sealed 2025 and 100% of proceeds will be donated.

I had the honor of sharing the weekend at @oddmallpnw.bsky.social with some incredible local artists. @lizzydart.bsky.social was my artist alley buddy; a talented illustrator of whimsical felines and inspired fantasy art. Super nice, smart, all-round wonderful human! lizzyd.art/art-gallery/...
