I'm starting to think that once again, I need to be done with social media. As much as I want to see the posts from select friends and whatnot, I'm just not disciplined enough. The doomscrolling needs to stop, and the signal to noise ratio on all platforms fucking suuucks at this point.

The most depressing ad this year depicts a content creator saying how it can be kinda lonely, but not after they've "hired" N Grok Bots. We can't be letting people who are already socially isolated fall deeper into this shit, and the "hiring" wording is so problematic. How do we fix this?

When I gave my keynote last week about community defense in Minnesota, someone from Ukraine came up to me afterward and said thank you for talking about what it’s like to be under attack and fight back, because most people can’t relate. I wish we couldn’t, but hey Ukrainian friends: we see you.

"One thing I see on this train is that Ukrainians choose to keep going. I don’t want to romanticize; the suffering and the grief are under the eyes, and in the public memorials, and everywhere. Every attack by the enemy hurts, as does every betrayal by an ally." snyder.substack.com/p/a-meditati...

“Chinga la migra, which for the non-Spanish speakers in the audience, means ‘we find ICE’s activities to be problematic’”

Congratulations to @lookitup.baby for being the first person I've heard say "chinga la migra" on stage at a tech conference 🔥🔥🔥 @blueteamcon.com

Hello from a ~12yr old Macbook Pro, though it's not running MacOS. Still does everything I need - 6hrs of battery, browser apps, development, screen recording at 1080 without dropped frames. You don't need new hardware every 1-5 years. You are lazy and purchasing things makes you feel good. Why?

Here's how to deal with incompetent AI chatbots; a live example, taken from my recent chat with Ally's bot: Bot: "I got my wires crossed. Can you try asking me in a different way?" Me: "No" Bot: "I'll pass the chat to a human associate who can help you." This is the way.

Quite happily running #FreeBSD 15.0 on my 2015 Macbook Pro Don't get me wrong, Discord in Firefox definitely feels like I'm on a decade+ old machine. Audio from Pandora never skips though, and Bluesky feels smooth to me most of the time. DWM and Kitty run more than well enough with picom.

You can even use OBS to screen record at native resolution, while doing all the other stuff and using pretty window transparency effects. It most certainly does not _want_ to do all that, and you will pay by having a very hot CPU and rapidly declining battery. But it _will_ do it.

Don't let anyone scare you from running your own email server. Is it work to set up and maintain? Yes. It's nowhere near the doom and gloom hassle I've heard others purport though. Most of the effort is front loaded. If you feel motivated to do it, and you understand the upkeep needed, go for it.

That's not to say it's *all* older software in the stack: - Caddy makes for a stupidly simple and reliable reverse proxy - Authelia is a great IAM solution There's a lot of ol' reliable going on too though: - Postfix - Prometheus / Grafana - FreeBSD (VNET jails, ZFS) - Puppet

After running my own mail servers again for about a full year now, I have no regrets. The biggest problem is finding clean address space; everything else is good system design and using tools that have been battle tested for decades

Slop is the perfect word to describe the low-quality, high-volume, AI-generated content being thrown around. If you don't have time to write it, I don't have time to read it.

Re-posting this because I saw a headline today where some tech oligarch was bloviating about whether the chatbots are conscious or not. Wrong question. The correct question is ‘why do we need tech oligarchs?’

We will be told, and very soon, that somebody has created General AI - a superhuman intelligence. Whoever made the thing will also say some version of: (a) It's a very secret sort of god (b) They're the only ones that god will talk to. (b) God says to let them fuck us. Seriously. Don't.

I feel like a lot of automations folks are doing with agents can probably be done mostly by shell scripts in a more deterministic fashion. Maybe just use a LLM for some categorization, instead of to do the whole thing.

I'm still writing code the hard way. I'm slow. I like to think critically about every line of code and fiddle with variable names until everything looks right. I treat code as a liability and try to ship only what's necessary. It's hard to imagine writing code any other way.

I know this is the wrong crowd for this but, I have an important test that I apply to new technologies that people think are going to fix everything. I ask "how does this help with the housing crisis?" Invariably (so far) it does not.

CNN in Minneapolis: We are seeing thousands and thousands of people, we've been standing on the corner here for the past ten minutes. This this crowd has not let up. It's just continuous.

I still think many Americans have no idea how bad this is going to get. I saw President Obama reposting a tepid, mealy-mouthed analysis by Ezra Klein—who's never seen a phenomenon he couldn't be 5 years late in incompetently circumscribing—and I felt like we don't have what it takes to survive this.
