I’ve been thinking a bit about the Peter Thiel comment about democracy and freedom being something he doesn’t believe are compatible anymore and what’s striking me is that he’s really saying “self-determination” isn’t what he believes in anymore.

Hot take. A startup or company being valued as a "unicorn" is a meaningless metric that is a poor stand-in for being a profitable company. Especially if those driving the valuation are doing so at the expense of the founders and early employees via terms like liquidation prefs.

I don’t really do much discussion about pop culture content… but Season 2 of Dark Matter on Apple is really fucking excellent.

Did some napkin math of current diesel prices, vs. getting near a 400Wh/kg battery, build the infra needed to replace our semi truck fleets and replacement costs of trucks - estimate about $1.4tn over 10 years (< the cost of the AI data center boom), saves about $1bn/year @ $10/gal diesel cost. /1

5/ Talk about a national infrastructure and industrial productivity investment... That's the kind of moonshot industrial policy we need, not gas-turbine driven datacenters for chatbots.

/3 Large scale electric truck fleets can also be used for grid emergencies and utility scale backups; likely to be more important as natural disasters increase in frequency.

/2 Estimates of replacing the fleet trucks over the same period with regular diesel trucks would be about $468bn. The all-in savings per year could be $200-390bn year depending on diesel pricing.

Reminder of the day: Soft power is not called that because it is weak. It’s called that because it costs less than hard power does and achieves the same or better outcome at a far lower cost.

I’ve been watching the AppleTV show, “Invasion,” and am wondering if all the writers are Gen Z or later, constitutionally incapable of understanding that pain and mistakes can equal growth and not everything that hurts should be set aside?

I’ve long thought that while you can get rich (small “r”) through hard work, the only way to become truly Wealthy is through exploitation. Sometimes that’s exploitation of an idea, which is good (assuming it’s yours), but most of the time it’s exploitation of people. Which is bad.

A fun (admittedly AI) exploration of alternatives to the "nationalize AI" stocks currently being yapped about, whose proposed architectures may leave the US taxpayer holding the bag again on boom/bust cycles: claude.ai/public/artif...

claude.aiPublic Value Capture from Frontier AI — Policy OptionExplore a three-instrument framework for capturing public value from frontier AI through royalties, warrants, and conditionality—without downside risk or regulatory conflicts.

What is the upside for founders of getting to market "first" if you give away all your upside to finance that velocity? 👎 to punitive liquidation prefs (this didn't happen to me, it's just a question).

A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter. I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

For no particular reason….posting former U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell’s mugshot before he went to Federal prison for committing numerous crimes on behalf and or/at the direction of President Nixon including obstruction of justice and conspiracy.

At this point, as I read “defund Palantir” trope, it’s worth noting that getting civilian oversight (with teeth?!) is probably more achievable that completely getting rid of it. This is a pattern we should be considering for a number of transformational technologies emerging.
