I'm setting a goal for myself to share one 2026 release on here (nearly) every day for as long as I can manage it. We'll see how I do, but there's such a backlog of albums worth talking about that it really shouldn't be much of a challenge. Pinning this post for whatever accountability that forces.

And since I missed yesterday: AOTD#69: Odd Nosdam – On Patrol (Alien Transistor) Exactly what I’d hoped for from a new Nosdam release: deep beats, ear-twigging samples, reverb and echo aplenty. Pans through strange frequencies revelling in the gaps between stations. The beat, as always, goes on.

AOTD#68: Hug – Hug Gentle and melodic guitar paired with a host of other, mostly acoustic textures — though synths and field recordings make appearances, too. The name and artwork capture the vibe well: inviting and playful and appealing in its simplicity.

AOTD#67: Zachary Gray - Trippin' (A Person Disguised as People) Two years from the first tease of the title track and a year+ since the remix EP, Trippin' has built up some anticipation. Worth the wait, fortunately. Beat-minded IDM that maintains an introspective mood without sacrificing momentum.

The 10 minute spin on "The Walls" is breezy in comparison but still stuffed full of wonderful digressions. Somehow both an enjoyable avant-folk release and a fascinating deconstruction of pop structures, showing what can happen when you push songs beyond the breaking point. The way out is through.

The feeling of movement and the changing scenery really added to my enjoyment of the shifting moods & evolving themes, and gave me an appreciation for the way the songs linger just long enough to establish a scene, but not long enough to let me fully find my footing with any of them. (2/3)

Perman's textural creativity and Wasylyk's melodicism work beautifully together, and several listens in, I still find myself wanting more of every track here. Which is both a compliment and a source of mild frustration, like trying to hold onto a dream in the minutes after waking. (3/3)

New episode: Another three hours of offbeat easy listening, including Les Baxter going Lovecraftian, Chopin without the piano, various shades of dream pop and shoegaze, and other sounds to help find your footing on a Monday morning. Streaming links: theam.ca/post/8309493...

AOTD#63: Petrels - Infangthief (Denovali) Genre-ambiguous, darkly melodic electronics that carry waves of drone, shoegaze, and more experimental sounds. Themes of anticapitalism and apocalypticism emerge in the (sampled?) lyrics and song titles, but under it all is a sense of resilience, even hope.

Last I heard of Petrels was about a decade ago with Flailing Tomb, and then I fell off the bandwagon, so to speak. My loss, I guess, and it looks like I have a fair bit to catch up on. Including a follow-up/sister album that'll be coming out soon.

Reinstalled threads for about ten minutes and yep, I was correct to delete that.

So much of social media is just the two minutes hate but also neverending and with an infinite stream of targets.

A not-at-all Thanksgiving-themed episode on a holiday Monday. Instead, you get apocalyptic Axelrod, city pop from a 1980 Marvel vampire anime, music for wildflowers and weather systems, and other eclectic sounds to start your week on solid footing. Hope you enjoy it. Links: theam.ca/post/8302925...

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

AOTD#55: Andy Boay – Doomed Much poppier (in an experimental psych sort of way) than last year's "You Took That Walk For The Two Of Us" and certainly worlds away from Tonstartssbandht, but still strikingly singular. The Beach Boys if Brian was restricted to a Tascam and got into tape manipulation.

AOTD#52: Helen – Linda’s Head As good as everyone is saying. Grouper is obviously something special, but Harris in more visceral territory is always a treat. A very 90s record — shoegaze, slowcore, or just call it alt like I would have back then without needing microgenres. Fuzzy. Loud. Great.

Think anyone would call me on moving my birthday to October? Always felt like more of an autumn personality than a summer one anyway.

But also definitely some Phillip Glass and some bluegrass — kind of reminds me of Spiro, who I haven’t thought of in ages but were clearly onto a good thing with that particular blend.

…the more ambient turns (“Head on the Clouds”, “Ephemeral”) are plenty lovely too. And so is the steel guitar on opener “The Beginning of the End,” which mines a similar dusty prairie-psych vein to Jeffrey Silverstein.

...which is how it should be for an experimental pop release. "Sour Cherry" flirts with melody, with what sound like clarinet and feedback given equal footing. "For My Lover and the Gum Trees" and "Tender Chaotic" embrace it fully with lush microtonal harmonies. A surprising and poetic release.

Oh, I didn't share Monday's episode. Here it is: fewer tracks than usual because of an extended interview with a federal minister on the upcoming Alberta separation referendum. Hopefully non-Alberta listeners will understand, but you can also just grab the Apple Music playlist... Links in next post.

As expected with Lacek, the production is exceedingly crisp, and the cosmic/kosmische atmosphere is highly immersive. More impressive is how distinct Light Conductor feels from the ambient Besnard release from earlier this year. Same universe, different Galaxy I suppose.
