Dems, this isn't that hard. Trump is (1) incompetent and (2) only about enriching himself and his cronies. Anything coming out of his mouth is an attempt to distract from (1) and (2). Repeat as needed.

Think of it this way: One freshman Senator you may not like can do little or no harm, but an unhinged President, unchecked by a Senate majority, can and will do massive harm.

Clarence Thomas will be 80 at the end of Trump's term, and Sam Alito will be 78. If Republicans keep Senate majority, they can resign & enable Trump to lock in a MAGA SCOTUS majority for a generation. Measure your reservations about imperfect Dem Senate candidates against that.

I've been involved in Supreme Court confirmation battles for almost 40 years. The road to a SCOTUS MAGA majority is paved with well-intentioned Democrats who let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

BREAKING WSJ: Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, Trump, and Xi Jinping meet next month to talk about Ukraine in an attempt to negotiate an end to the four-year conflict that would favor Moscow.

I'm a bit more optimistic. Trump will want little from Congress, so no leverage there. Dems' power turns on their willingness to use appropriations leverage to keep Trump on a short leash. Shutdowns will be a test of political will. Agree that refusal to confirm SCOTUS nominees is an absolute must.

@nytimes What happens if the Dems win the Senate and House next month? Maybe less than you think, or hope. Check out my column, for better or worse. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/18/o...

We seem to be in a moment where the DSA is getting considerably more attention than its representation in the electorate warrants. Paradoxically, the larger the Democratic House majority in the next Congress, the less influence DSA will have within the Democratic caucus. www.wsj.com/politics/ele...

It was an honor to serve President Obama as an advisor in the White House and I am humbled to have his support as I campaign to serve as Colorado’s next Governor. 👇

This. 💯 Until the Supreme Court has a durable majority who interpret the Constitution to provide for a well-functioning democracy for We The People, with liberty and justice for all, everything else will be provisional.

OpenAI and Anthropic face the *risk* of unbounded liability for catastrophic harm caused by their agents, yet they have been headed for IPOs. Is it any wonder that they are now turning to Congress for regulation?

Pope Leo thrashing Peter Thiel in the final act is the sci-fi movie the world is waiting for.

Multi-billionaire tech bro Peter Thiel, right winger who financed JD Vance's Senate race, today called Pope Leo "a useful idiot for the Chinese Communists". Pope Leo has put out various warnings of AI and tech being a danger to our hearts and humanity.

Suggested reframing of the conversation about AI: Talk about the risks created by the *companies* that produce AI models, rather than the risks created by the models themselves. E.g. "There is an x percent risk that OpenAI and Anthropic may destroy humanity." Put the responsibility where it belongs.

The simplest way to make AI firms more careful about the risks they create is to make them and their executives legally and financially responsible for the damage they cause.
