THREAD: The ceasefire isn’t stopping Israel from committing genocide in Gaza. Here’s how Israel is still killing Palestinians.

“It was like this biblical battle where the Palestinian men … went in front of me to protect me.” It’s young Palestinian men who put their lives on the line every day to defend their families, homes, and even foreign journalists from violent Israeli settlers and soldiers.

“My story’s getting a lot of attention around the world. ... But I can't imagine what it’s like for all of the victims that have gone through this same ordeal + are living with the threat of this violence on a daily basis,” Heidi Levine told CNN’s Jake Tapper. Israel also blocks Palestinian patients from leaving Gaza for treatment abroad. Since the genocide began, at least 505 Palestinian cancer patients have died while waiting for Israel to issue permits for medical evacuation.

No one should have to fight cancer while fighting to survive genocide. Palestinian women deserve access to diagnosis, medicine, treatment, and the freedom to seek care wherever they need it. Israel’s genocide must end.

The true scale of the crisis is likely much higher. Israel's destruction of Gaza’s health care system has made even getting screened or diagnosed extraordinarily difficult. Before the genocide, Gaza had around 15 mammography machines. Doctors say only three remain.

Israel controls Gaza’s borders and uses that control to restrict food, fuel, medicine, and lifesaving medical equipment from entering. For cancer patients, that can mean delayed diagnoses, interrupted treatment, and fewer chances to survive.

“But what made me angrier than [Israeli] soldiers' ability to return to ordinary life was something else. Some of them did not speak about killing as something they had been forced to do. They spoke about it as something they could enjoy.”

Palestinian families in the West Bank rely on the olive harvest for their income. Israeli settlers know that—so they burn down olive groves and attack Palestinians, with the goal of making life in the West Bank unlivable for them. Settlers have damaged more than 2,500 olive trees this year alone.

Israel has also made it nearly impossible for Palestinian children to learn, play, or simply grow up safely. Using US-supplied weapons, Israel has destroyed or damaged more than 90% of Gaza’s schools, along with homes, parks, and other places that once made childhood possible

Trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté has said that for Palestinians, trauma is never truly “post” because the violence never ends. For Gaza’s children, three years of genocide will shape lives that have barely begun. Palestinian children deserve to grow up in freedom and safety.

And losing family is only one of the traumas Palestinian children have endured. Israel has used its control over Gaza’s borders to block food, fuel, medicine, and other lifesaving aid, subjecting children to years of starvation and malnutrition while their bodies are still developing.

Now, the Sundance award-winning documentary "Who Killed Alex Odeh?" investigates why no one was ever held accountable—and uncovers new information about the Israeli government’s role in obstructing efforts to bring Odeh’s killers to justice.

Odeh was a teacher, poet, father of three, and a director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. He dedicated his life to fighting racism in the US and helping Americans understand Palestinians and Arabs. That's why the JDL wanted him dead.

The JDL was founded by convicted terrorist and far-right Israeli leader Meir Kahane. After Odeh’s killing, the three FBI suspects fled to Israel and eventually moved to an illegal Israeli settlement built on stolen Palestinian land. For four decades, Odeh’s family has demanded justice.

“This is one of the hidden goals of this genocide. For the Israeli army to tear apart everything that connects Palestinians, everything that creates a social fabric and solidarity in Gaza, and replace it with this constant, urgent need for individual survival.”

Three years ago today, Israel began committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The immeasurable trauma and grief Israel has inflicted on Palestinians will impact Gaza for generations. It’s time to end Israel’s genocide by blocking US weapons to Israel.
