It occurs to me that I don't usually post during prime time here in the states. Hi. I'm thejazztome.info and I have well over a million words about jazz history a few clicks away. 600+ albums of liner notes, reviews, and context. All for free! #jazzsky #musicsky

If y'all aren't listening to Bob then you should be.

In the 9 pm CDT hour of Jazz in the Night tonight on Kansas Public Radio, from the Vinyl Vault, drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers from 1977. #jazzsky Also streaming at kansaspublicradio.org

By the time we get to October, I will have been away from home for about seven weeks, minus a quick drive home in the middle. Caring for a loved one, then burying them, then settling their estate is a lot of work, but on the plus side I'm going to have a hell of a lot of records to unpack and show.

if you've been following along with my nonsense today, here's my first pass at what this Wardell page should look like. thejazztome.info/wardell-gray... - let me know if that top section is intuitively readable

re: previous post, some 10"ers and EPs from the early 50s have incredible art. for instance, here are the two releases that make up the basic-by-comparison Wardell Gray Memorial- Prestige 7008. It makes me happy to know that someone might see this art for the first time on my site #jazzsky #vinylsky

I'm also experimenting with how to display reissues for albums that received different names and album covers when being released on new labels, for example Clef or Norgran to Verve in the mid-late 50s. A search on the site for either cat number or title would get you to the page. #jazzsky #vinylsky

If I cared at all about traffic I'd be publishing pages for 1960s Blue Note titles all day long, but instead my brain won't let me sleep unless you have easy access to the most obscure minutiae possible.

First time hearing a record from the Charlie Parker label, which was ran by his widow Doris in the early 1960s. This LP was recorded by someone sneaking a tape recorder into the Savoy Ballroom in 1950 and sounds atrocious/incredible, depending on how much of a jazz sicko you are. #jazzsky #vinylsky

Did I "need" this? No. Is it a "practical" investment? No. Am I "behind on my mortgage?" That's none of your business. But all I know is that I have one more Impulse spine for the shelves and a little extra Television dust in the house, and it's absolutely worth it.

I'll put together a post this weekend with what I've posted on the site lately, but I'd just like to go on the record now and say that this is a masterclass in minimalist design. #jazzsky #vinylsky

Getting back in the swing of things from vacation. That means going through my purchases, including two incredible OG records and a handful of CDs. #vinylsky #jazzsky

Reached out to the family member of a jazz journalist over the weekend about writing something for the site and the response was more than I could have ever expected. Will keep the wraps on it for now, but it feels good keeping people's memories alive.

the passing of Sonny Rollins highlighted for me that the default Wordpress search sucks. I've since improved it, so if you search for Sonny Rollins (or a label, author, or specific album) you'll get groups of album covers instead of ugly text. Please try it out and try and break it for me. #jazzsky

Pickups from Stash Records in Longview, WA today. Only LP I'm familiar with is Soular Energy. Ray Brown is great, but I remember Gene Harris stealing the show. Of particular note is that the Coltrane Japan set is 6 songs spread across four discs including a 57 minute (!) My Favorite Things. #jazzsky

A little bit of nerdery for the middle of the night. I've absolutely gone down the database rabbit hole lately. Spending a lot more time cataloging reviews than building new Jazz Tome pages. There are so many publications to catalog that it's overwhelming, but it'll pay off in the end. #jazzsky

that's over 4,000 verified reviews and i've only scratched the surface of the mid to late 1950s. i'm hoping this data will be valuable to researchers some day.

Received roughly 125 issues of Jazz Monthly in the mail today, mostly from the 1960s. A substantial haul. The reviews from these issues will eventually wind up on my website. #jazzsky

I feel like the absolute most normie jazz person ever. I'm always like "you should listen to Miles, Coltrane, Ornette and Monk!" But I mean... you should!

However good you think Electric Miles is... it's like so much better than that. I feel like some of the stuff he did we still haven't caught up with.

Spinning one of my favs tonight, Gigi Gryce - Saying Somethin' on New Jazz from 1960. Love the striking purple album cover; it's difficult to get a New Jazz LP in this shape. Also Richard Williams blows his ass off on trumpet. A great 60s session man who also played on Broadway. #jazzsky #vinylsky
