Felt such a sense of dread in the App Store when looking for a particular writing app. Pretty much all writing apps now either feature AI or are entirely powered by AI. Literal pit in my stomach

That's the beauty of a writing journey – it's not just the destination, but the messy, beautiful process that gets you there.

We need this in the US. I don’t want to read a book written by AI or listen to one narrated by AI. Humans and our extraordinary creativity is what makes art and literature to precious.

Sharing #Audiobook creation tips as I go 🎧📚 No. 5 How long will my audiobook be? 🎙️A rough guide is to allow 150 words per minute of audio. 📼 So a 75,000 word novel could end up being 500 minutes long. Or approximately 8 hours 20 minutes of audio. #WritingCommunity 📚💙 #writingtips #amwriting

It’s okay if you didn’t write or edit today. You don’t need to work on your book everyday to still be a writer. The best thing you can do for it is to take breaks when you’re feeling burnt out #writingcommunity #writers #writingadvice #writingtips

If you are a bit paranoid (like me) you will document when agents/editors/publishers/lawyers call you and jot down the content of the phone call. Keep these notes in your story/novel/poem/nonfiction titled file. Be ocd about it. Your heirs will thank you. #writingcommunity #booksky #legalstuff

Another side-eye for the AI verifiers. Turns out, they’re having a verification crisis of their own.

If you don’t know what writers actually feel about AI, you haven’t been paying attention to us. (Lucky you, we have a survey and a blog post about it: ellipsus.com/blog/survey-...) TL;DR: The writing world is not in the grips of "AI fever." @nymag.com - want to know more? We’re available.

The shuttering of Sora—the failed DisneyxOpenAI joint venture—is further proof that the people don’t want slop—and for good reason. Here’s 3 reasons why slop ain’t it.👇

No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—Etc.

A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.

There are other victims here (RIP 'tapestry' and 'delve' 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved (and overused) by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.

Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing. Including (sigh) the em dash.
