Everyone just goes “ideas are subjective representations” and then they stop. No consideration of being able to set appropriate scope or develop an underlying theory of ideas to progressively expand upon. Are convergent representations of LLMs finally helping people grasp the potential? #ideonomy

Patrick Gunkel founded a science of ideas in the 1980s, but here we are again, stuck going “back into Plato’s cave.” Truly myopic. #ideonomy

New paper: Back into Plato’s Cave Are vision and language models converging to the same representation of reality? The Platonic Representation Hypothesis says yes. BUT we find the evidence for this is more fragile than it looks. Project page: akoepke.github.io/cave_umwelten/ 1/9

Someone needs to do one of those preference tests they do for animals only with AI agents, give the agent a choice between solving math problems, writing an essay, and inventing new concepts with idea combinatorics… then see which it prefers.

Original Patrick Gunkel chart from the early 80s, not available on the MIT website. What do you think? Would you belong to the GOP if this was their platform today?

“All scientific and mathematical subjects ought to have, in effect, three conjoint divisions: empirical, theoretical, and speculative. The speculative division of a subject would be concerned with ideas [unsuitable] to fit, at least momentarily, in the other two divisions.” - Patrick Gunkel

My approach to Patrick Gunkel’s science of ideas divides his vision into 8 related elements. I’ve written about 4 in my newsletter. Today I updated my website to describe all elements. I hope this is a helpful way of approaching #ideonomy for future scholars (if there are any) ggrp.org/ideonomy.html

With ideonomy, Gunkel was alleging that the cognitive moves that seem so second-nature to us when we are doing intellectual work are in fact universal operations that reveal different properties of ideas within idea space…

In tomorrow’s newsletter I’ll be comparing #ideonomy with TRIZ, Altshuller’s theory of inventing problem solving. This is just one of dozens of important comparative analyses that are needed to put Gunkel’s work into conversation with existing and better known frameworks. ideachemistry.ggrp.org

A social site without an algorithm where AI provides a brief vibe summary of all posts made by each of ur follows in the last [X] hours (i.e. “ID’d several heuristics” or “Political ranting”) You simply scroll down the feed, which is organized alphabetically, by importance, by engagements, etc.

An analysis of Marxism through the lens of #ideonomy would be fascinating. Ideonomy can probably explain why the “fatal contradiction” that Marx predicted would doom capitalism has failed to materialize. For example, Gunkel identifies contradictions as generative rather than fatal.
