SRC changed their terms of use yesterday, and released a news post with an FAQ. They make it sound like not a big deal. It's a big deal. The Creative Commons licence is gone. They claim ownership over the data now. Thread about what this means, and what we can do about it 🧵

I didn't expect src to go back on the changes from 1 October, but these new terms are very good for open data and for the community. Best thing they could have done given the situation. Good shit, Meta

We’ve updated our Terms of Use again, based on your feedback. Your Runs are yours, and Leaderboard Data is now open to everyone, for any purpose. What changed and why, plus answers to common questions: www.speedrun.com/news/wlvmlk81

Preserving speedrunning history Since 3 weeks, runs submitted to SRC are no longer openly licensed. If you ever go inactive, they can only be copied with SRC's explicit permission. You own your runs, but you have to act asap to keep them open. Please act now!! thread🧵

Oh i have to state this legally: therun did not access src for any data retrieval from 1 October onward. All data that therun imported is from a public archive of CC-licensed data. Also I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice

It is fine to keep posting your runs to SRC. You own them. But if you leave them just there and you ever become inactive or otherwise unable to export your own runs, they will be locked behind whatever Elo wants to do with them. So please help preserve speedrunning history

Again: this is not about therun, I really really don't care whether you upload your runs to my site or to a public google docs or whatever. Just anywhere is good. My leaderboards aren't really usable yet anyway for a few months. But at least they're under the CC license.

To accommodate this, I have made two major changes to therun's leaderboards: - All leaderboards fall under CC BY-NC 4.0 - All src runs that also fall under that licence are now on therun This means therun's leaderboards are now complete (except October) and open data under CC

You can publish your runs on therun easily by exporting your profile from src, and importing it through your therun settings. But I don't care where you do it. Your runs are yours and you are free to publish them under conditions you want. Preferably under an open license.

SRC has already stated that they will revise the new terms, but 3 weeks later it is still unclear what this means and if they are going to open the data again. If they don't re-instate the CC license, they have free reign over any runs from after October 1 that can't be exported

What can we do? 1) Please convince Elo to re-instate the CC license. Speedrunning history should be open and free to use by anyone. We can't risk one private company controlling a large portion of it. 2) Upload your runs somewhere public and state that they can be re-used

After the changes src made to their terms on October 1st, there is a huge risk that a large portion of speedrunning history will be locked behind one private company's intentions. You are no longer allowed to copy anyone's runs but your own from after 1 October.

This means that in 2 years, if a community member goes inactive or is otherwise unable to export their own runs, their runs can only be moved to a different site if Elo explicitly allows you to. If they introduce more unpopular changes and you want to move them, you just can't.

In 2021, SRC re-instated the CC license, stating "We strongly believe in SR.C as an open platform for use by communities, and we have no interest in restricting access to any runs". 3 weeks ago, they did a full 180 and heavily restricted access to all runs but your own.

I've been getting 200+ requests to moderate leaderboards on therun: huge thanks to all!!! But i feel like the following should be said plainly: therun's leaderboards are in very early beta, they only launched 2 weeks ago. There are still many bugs and missing features. 1/5

I am not asking for communities to move their boards. A central place with open data is the only important thing. If that place has good features for moderating and maintaining history, and promises to keep that data open forever, i don't care if its therun, src or elsewhere 4/5

It will take me a couple of months to get them to a state where they will be sufficient for use by all communities. For some smaller communities, they may already be good enough. Please let me know any bugs or features that you are missing. Always happy to listen. 2/5

What will happen with data on src is still unclear. Upon learning about the terms changes, I have halted all API calls to src and the only way to import runs from there is through your user export. But this is flawed, because the export is missing many pieces of data needed. 3/5

What can we do? - Export your own runs - Talk to your game's mods. - Ask Elo directly (mail, their news post, discord) Not asking to switch to my leaderboards, I don't give a shit about that. This is about much more. Community backlash to this has changed their mind before.

I wrote a blog post to go deeper into all this and to spread awareness. Please read it to dive deeper into what this all means. therun.gg/blog/leaderb... I spent like 10 hours reading through the terms to really understand it, but I'm not a lawyer. This is not legal advice

therun.ggLeaderboards and speedrun.com’s new terms of servicespeedrun.com replaced its terms of use on 1 October 2026 and dropped the Creative Commons licence. What changed, why it matters for runners and community tools, and what you can do.

You can still export your own runs if you want. But runners who quit or are in other ways unable to export their data are stuck on src forever. Huge part of speedrunning history now lives on one platform, under that one platform's terms. This is unacceptable

And this is just a small part of what the news post and the FAQ doesn't mention. The new terms completely hammer down any competition and remove any intention of having open, inclusive data.

Donations now count as "commercial". You use ko-fi to support your discord bot servers? Can't use SRC data. Stats site with Patreon? (me lol) can't use it. Even charity marathons can't use SRC data anymore without explicit permission of Elo, their parent company.

Using SRC to build anything with "substantially similar" features is banned. Leaderboard, run tracking, runner profile, you name it. Basically every speedrun tool is banned from using SRC data. They don't even allow you to copy runs manually to those tools anymore????

SRC's news post about this says nothing changes day to day for runners. They ship it together with an AI bot ban (good!!!), but there's a LOT they don't mention. Donations are now commercial. Competitors can't use their api anymore. They can't even manually copy runs (!!!!!)

Disclosure: I run therun, so this affects me and therun's leaderboards too. But this is not about that, this is much bigger than my site. Every discord bot, overlay, marathon, tool that uses SRC data is affected. And it affects runners and mods much more than they make it seem.

A year after Elo acquired src, they changed their terms to do exactly this: remove Creative Commons. After community pushback, they put it back stating "no interest in restricting access to any runs" Now, 5 years later, the licence is gone again, and src act like it's no biggie

Would seasonal leaderboards be a good idea? Would they motivate you to do runs to get a good time each month/quarter/year?

On therun's leaderboards, the default landing page lets you see an overview of all categories. This is also available for IL's and Category Extensions. This is configurable per game. You can also choose have users land directly on the first leaderboard. pretty cool no?

As an aside, IL's and Category extensions are just category groups on therun. You can define groups for your categories in any way you want, and they will be shown grouped. This allows for much more flexibility.

Leaderboards have a ton of tools to make moderating boards easier Here's the built-in retime tool: frame skip to the start frame, press start, automatically skip to the end, press end, and record time. Doesn't have to be hard! Works for both twitch and youtube VODs

For the last 2 years I've been building leaderboards on therun. Today, they go in beta. I'm looking for communities to test them out. Not to switch over, purely for testing. Import your board from SRC easily, poke around, give me thoughts. Contact me here or through discord to test stuff!

Features: - Auto-submitted PB's directly from LiveSplit - Board overview page - Cross-category standings - Advanced mod tools - SRC import of your runs - No ads, no paywalls, no selling any of your data - Full board and game exports, data is always yours - Much more to list!

Terrible take. 5% is way too lenient. If you're not top 3 in your game they shouldn't even allow you in the venue tbh

This was a legit public (thankfully rejected) suggestion made in the Super Mario 3D World server & I'm sorry but this is the most elitist and horrible take I've ever heard! GDQ and ESA are public submission events so making so only the top 6 runners can submit is crazy! (1/4)

It's now possible to force-start and force-end races. When people don't ready up or something goes wrong, you can click the buttons to force the site to either start or finish the race. Race mods and race creators can do this

If you are (or were) a leaderboard mod and have good ideas how to improve leaderboards and how to improve the experience of moderating them, please get in touch. Would love to share thoughts :)

I've started working on a rework of the games system. This prepares for a fully fledged leaderboards feature, with verification, filters, customization etc. Will take a while but looking forward to sharing it with you all!

I created the ultimate pace pal tool When going to the /live page, every run now has a big green button on the top right called "Commentary". This opens a panel with all info about the run you're watching that you need. Small thread below to explain all the things it does :)

The fourth tab contains stories. This is a human readable format of some of the interesting facts about the current split, the previous split, about the runner in general, and about the run in general.

The next tab, "Run", shows you general info about the current run. Graphs with delta's to PB, a graph with the timesaves, and per-split info. See the main post for a screenshot :)

The third, "Prediction", contains predictions for the current split, for the total run, and a history of predictions for this run. Let me know if it's accurate and see if you can beat my predictions bitch

The panel you see consists of five tabs. The first, "Split", has all the info about the current split. Times for the segment (PB, Best Possible), a prediction for the segment etc. It has the reset rate and info about the previous 20 times this split was completed.
