I saw several Lawrence’s goldfinches in Catalina State Park / Tucson today. I didn’t know they were there or I would have brought a longer lens. There were several of them flying around together near the water. 🪶

It’s my birthday and Loewe sent me this fantastic notebook and cotton bag - I love it! Totally unexpected and a nice touch.

4 hobbies at the same time: birdwatching, field recording, photography, hiking. It’s fall in Tucson. Catalina State Park.

Nagra SN reel-to-reel tape recorder from the late 1970s. These recorders are very small but are extremely well-engineered and are high fidelity. Everything is modular and each module can be swapped to the same model from different years. They are physically and functionally compatible.

I bought these red reels from a seller in South Africa and compared to a well-kept example (the silver one on the left) they are pretty rough. I have managed to clean them up and salvage them, fortunately. The recordings are actually very cool - they are old field recordings of birds and insects.

What is really cool is that the recordings are very high quality, with only a few spots with mic noise or wind noise. There is no urban noise at all, including low frequencies from cars or airplanes. I wonder what’s on the others. I wonder if Merlin can ID the birds…

I was hiking today in a remote part of a canyon and I came across a large boulder that had a stash of camp supplies under it. Cans of food, bottles of water, a backpack with a shirt a hat, some climbing rope and various other items. A bag with a blanket. Been there a while. Very odd.

There is a corn / maize plant volunteering in the sand wash. No corn fields around here, I wonder where it came from. Tucson, AZ

I learned that sotol is in the asparagus family. I always thought it was a type of yucca (sort of is) but apparently it’s closely related to agave, which is also in the asparagus family. Shoulda known the flower shoot of an agave plant looks like a giant asparagus. It’s all asparagus!
