guy who doesn't believe in the dismal logic of prioritisation but still donates money, truly randomly; their year-end donations last year were $10,000 to (rolls dice) The Fantastic Experimental Latino Theater Inc
It is less rare that a policy can improve other people's lives by sending cops to beat someone up, but one should still be cautious; a doctor harvesting one man's organs to save five is a social harm.
We also launched a big specific call for founders for ambitious new AI safety initiatives today: coefficientgiving.org/tailwind/
So much more to be doing here!
Ahead of the coming "third wave of philanthropy," we want to give hundreds of millions of dollars to "general managers" to lead targeted funds tackling big problems in global health and wellbeing (h/t @nanr.bsky.social for the frame).
Apply by October 2: coefficientgiving.org/funds/globa...
๐บ Welcome back to AI Safety Week on the Bluesky Network! If you're just tuning in: an Anthropic pretraining researcher has resigned, warning the labs are "gambling with our lives"; agents have recently been spotted outside their sandboxes (again!); and one $2T IPO is proceeding as scheduled.

GiveWell uses a cost of $4.25 per net in their spreadsheet, rather than the $2 per net that the Against Malaria Foundation actually pays (with remaining costs being covered by other organisations). Here's why that reflects the marginal impact of donations to AMF!

Incredible. When Eโn Mโk & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse.
A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.
Reasons not to worry right now are that human viruses are much more complicated than these bacteria viruses, Arc specifically isn't trained on eukaryote viruses, and transmission in a petri dish does not apply to transmission in the real world between organisms.
Reasons to worry are obvious.
The jump from bacteria to humans is a decently big fence - like, if you just want a genome, smallpox has been sequenced (๐ฌ), and so far there haven't been any disasters.
if you think that it is bad at all when a child in guinea dies of malaria, instead of neither good nor bad, then you hold an unusual cosmopolitan worldview
