I was sad to wake up and hear of the death of Tom Skerritt this morning. He started in beloved movies like Alien, The Dead Zone, Poison Ivy, Poltergeist III, Savage Harvest, and Desperation. He might have also done a movie with Tom Cruise. But the horror community honors a better class of movies.

Sometimes I wonder if John Carpenter’s The Thing is really about the horrifying realization that nobody knows Childs’ first name. Everyone's so desperate to avoid the awkwardness they burn down the whole facility as a distraction. Seriously, what is his first name?

I think about this every time I see Alien. If the crew had simply followed chain of command and protocol, all of which said to listen to Ripley, that franchise would’ve been over in the first 40 minutes. It would have saved the lives of countless fictional people.
