This article by @tahir.bsky.social describes a promising new development: community safety departments. I'm in favor of exploring these as long as they're understood as a complement to, and not a substitute for, traditional law enforcement. newrepublic.com/article/2159...

If someone has more than anecdotes, send my way. I have my own stories, but they run in the other direction: in many cities, residents from impacted communities are desperate for anything that makes them safer, including technology like APRs. The complaints come mostly from activists, not residents.

It's frustrating: for-profit companies oversell these products, then anti-law enforcement activists demonize them. Hard for policymakers to make the right call with all this noise.

Think about it: it's not just about less death, it's about more life. About 200 more people a year living their lives, graduating school, getting jobs, getting married, and so on. It's wonderful to think about.

You may say this is political, but the fact of the matter is that the Biden administration had a smart, balanced approach to reducing gun violence and the Trump team does not, which will likely result in more lives lost to gun violence. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/07/u...

Kudos to UPenn’s Ben Struhl & Jeremy Biddle, MONSE’s Stefanie Mavronis, Police Commissioner Worley, Safe Streets, Roca, YAP. Focus on the highest risk w/ supports & accountability.🙌
