I'm working on ship-to-ship docking, which means I need to define where the docking ports on the ship are. Fortunately, this is a simple problem to solve with a raycaster, which gives me the position and normal of the point I click on. #gameDev #spaceship

Got nerd sniped and did some writing about how DMX lighting would be configured in the game. I'm pretty pleased with the result — objectively better in almost every way compared to the predecessor's DMX implementation. github.com/Thorium-Sim/... #gameDev #spaceship

github.comDMX Lighting Configuration · Thorium-Sim thorium-nova · Discussion #784Let's talk about lighting effects. If you aren't familiar with how DMX works, Thorium Classic's docs have a short primer that will get you up to speed. Lights are difficult. For starters, every bri...

Last one for now — Engineer! The one that keeps the ship running for everyone else. That's training done for all 5 stations.

Sensors training. Real quick, since it's a relatively simple station. #gameDev #spaceship

Tactical training. Even faster, would be shorter if the torpedos loaded faster. #gameDev #spaceship

Also Operations, which includes communications and cargo control. A slightly more complicated station. #gameDev #spaceship

As I've been working on the training/tutorial, I realized that I'd probably want to make sure that I verify that it continues working in the future. So I wrote an automated test that performs all of the actions to advance the training. Seems to be working well. #gameDev #spaceship

The initial missions in Thorium Nova will use a smaller, short-range ship, so I decided to put it together today. The hexagonal turbo lift is a homage to the physical bridge set in Utah that this ship is based on. Rooms for every ship system are split between two decks. Cozy but comfortable.

My latest diversion is complete. Heat and coolant is much more transparent — you can even see how coolant flows through the whole setup! The way heat is modeled is much simpler too. #gameDev #spaceship

Before I start writing the training for the Engineering station, which includes rectors, power distribution, repairs, and heat management, I'm buttoning down the behavior around heat. It's not great — figuring out how to cool down systems is not intuitive enough, so back to the drawing board.

I wrote a proposal about how I want to change things — a more simple coolant loop which should be easier to model in the simulation and more intuitive for users. Currently neck-deep in heat transfer equations, wish me luck! github.com/Thorium-Sim/... #gameDev #spaceship

github.comHeat and Coolant · Thorium-Sim thorium-nova · Discussion #782I've discussed heat in several places, including #369 and #521 As I was working on tweaking heat to make it work correctly, I realized it's incredibly opaque — it's easy to see how much heat a syst...

This research is really just about understanding the underlying physics well enough so I know how best to fudge it. 🙃

I've finally adjusted the power requirements for each system so they aren't all the same. Fortunately, everything seems to be working. Also added a little button to turn off charging a battery, if you need to divert power to specific batteries. Next, balancing! #gameDev #spaceship

Engineering Panels are done, including an integration with damage reports. Randomly, a damage report will instruct you to make adjustments to the controls on the panel in order to complete the repair, and it's working wonderfully! #gameDev #spaceship

Actually, yesterday I solved a doozy of a problem. Each cable box is its own component, but the cables themselves need to be orchestrated by a parent context, and it all needs to be aware of the exact position of the cable ports. So all stuff where direct DOM manipulation would be easier than React.

New Engineering Panels screen for damage control, very similar to the Spaceteam mobile game. I need a way to randomly generate strings for the switches and buttons, so I'm revamping the text interpolation engine I built to support text pattern includes for reuse and organization #gameDev #spaceship

Did a refactor of how data is loaded. Since so much of it is user-defined outside of the codebase, I wanted to make sure that it was parsed and validated as it was loaded. This should hopefully help plugin authors find issues in their plugin files. #gameDev #spaceship

Today's update: I realized that my training overlays might make it a little hard to see the content underneath, so I added a little ghost 👻 icon to the side. Hovering over it hides the overlay and backdrop using a CSS :has selector. #gameDev #spaceship

Work continues on the Cargo Control training. I've improved the UI for the Cargo Control card, adding icons to the search results and fixing a bug where cargo wasn't actually transferred. I've also added new events which can be triggered remotely to change the selected deck or room on the ship map.

Today as I was working on training for the Cargo Control card, I realized it might be handy to have a timeline block that can run arbitrary code. I made a low-security sandbox and created a "Run Code" block that runs whatever code you write and puts the result into the timeline's variables.

You are up to date.
