In each episodic game session, your team of hunters – the Chosen, the Professionals, Spell-Slingers, Action Scientists, Celebrities, Curse-Eaters, and any of two dozen more archetypes – might tackle Bigfoot, collar a chupacabra, save the Mole King's Brides, or drive away demons. And next week, you'll do it again.

Dresden Vampires - Red & Black Courts - I'd almost say no for similar reasons why I said no to Buffy vamps... but actually, the original person in this loses their soul, and thus their agency... and have a personality rewrite

Thrythlind (He/Him/They) - Basic necessities shouldn't bankrupt

@thrythlind.bsky.social

Dresden White Court vampires - yes, but they are pushed by urges rather than sheer personality rewrite or control. The demon within them may or may not be a thinking creature. It may instead just be a manifested bestial urge. White Court vamps have souls and can choose good and evil.

Buffy Vampires - strangely, I'd say no. Typically in Buffy when a vampire kills someone the soul goes on to its rightful afterlife while a demon steps in to claim the body and take on some twisted aspects of the victim's memories and personality. But neither entity is cursed by this.

Thrythlind (He/Him/They) - Basic necessities shouldn't bankrupt

@thrythlind.bsky.social

Dresden Werewolves - various... there's several varieties, the recurring characters you see in several novels, no... it's just a power they learned from a spirit. loup-garou, absolute curse. lycanthropes ... I'd say no, that seems to be a willfully induced berserker state by inviting a spirit in.

Vampire the Masquerade - absolutely a curse, there is a creeping erosion of agency and personality that goes on. That said, between all the residents of the world of darkness, there's enough resources to allow the Kindred to thrive with agency... but the cooperation to get there is absent.

Thrythlind (He/Him/They) - Basic necessities shouldn't bankrupt

Werewolf the Apocalypse - The lycanthropy is not a curse... but the werewolves ARE cursed. They're cursed for things they did but they were already werewolves when they did those things. So this is an interesting case.

D&D vampires - mix, for true vampires, no ... you have to make a deal to become that... vampire spawn are capable of keeping themselves to a degree but their agency is easily subverted by the one that spawned them and time wears them down.

Thrythlind (He/Him/They) - Basic necessities shouldn't bankrupt

D&D werewolves - mix, born lycanthropes have total control and total agency. infected lycanthropes have their alignment and personality twisted and lose control and agency.

The Howling (original movie) - feels like a curse, the werewolves keep their agency but their personality even in human form changes. In the remake, it feels like a curse but the werewolves do have a sense of good and evil as the colony leader does try to find a way to coexist.

My Best Friend is a Vampire - not a curse, judging by the end where the vampire hunter calmly accepts being turned there may be some personality shift... though it wasn't apparent at all in the title character. The vampires have no need to kill and can live fine on pig's blood.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (Coppola movie) - definitely a curse, Dracula seems to suffer as well, but that part didn't particularly get sold for me. For his victims, yeah, they've lost their agency and been reduced to bestial remnants.

Wednesday vampires and werewolves - a matter of birth, not a curse. Werewolves have some issues with the full moon but with preparation they can avoid changing. Vampires we don't know much about but given there's a number of vampire kids without a lot of dead people, seems fine.

Carmilla webseries (KindaTV) - kind of in the middle, vampires are created as servants, they do not seem to be able to create other vampires. They have their own agency but do become more predatory. They do have a sense of good and evil. You can absolutely thrive with it as the series proves.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - for Dracula, it's a power, he did that to himself and exalts in his power. He's the original and seems to have been like this before becoming a vampire. For his victims, absolutely a curse, there's a lot of loss of agency, they are narrowed to a specific set of needs

@thrythlind.bsky.social

The Wolf Man - absolutely a curse, the victim has no control and loses all sense of self, driven to kill by the curse. in the 2010 version, this also seems to slowly erode the victim's conscience in their human form so they become increasingly evil.

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu - not enough information to know if this is a curse or not. We don't know how Carmilla became a vampire or if it is something she can do to other people. She could have been born that way or transformed herself through some deal or spell.

The thing about Freiren and Reincarnated as a slime is that at their core, they are character studies and not action anime. The fact that they don't skimp on their action sequences kind of confuses that. The action is amazing, even knowing the heroes will win. But they're not the point. just fun.

Thrythlind (He/Him/They) - Basic necessities shouldn't bankrupt

@thrythlind.bsky.social

Also, I'm not sure this is on purpose, but I love the way Slime both shows how Great man Theory happens... and thoroughly undercuts it. Because Rimuru's people constantly do things on their own and are the real reason for the progress. But they credit Rimuru even when they turns it down.
