Today we're thrilled to be publishing a new B-format edition of This Compulsion in Us by Tina Makereti. This is a beautifully written and deeply important book, which was the well-deserved winner of the 2026 Ockham New Zealand Book Award for General Non-Fiction.

We're excited to get it out onto shelves in this more affordable format that will let it reach an even wider readership 💙 Here are thoughts on the book from Ngāhuia Te Awekōtuku, Tusiata Avia, Ingrid Horrocks, and the Ockhams judges.

🎉🎉 pip adam has won the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction for Audition! The annual award honours a single work of imaginative fiction, and is inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s call for writers who are ‘realists of a larger reality,’ able to imagine alternatives to the way we live now.

This slide shows the Coffee House Press cover associated with the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize announcement, and also the Aotearoa cover by Philip Kelly, so you know how to track this book down in NZ bookshops... 😍

We are SO THRILLED for pip. Audition is a brilliant, strange, humane novel, and this award is just perfectly aligned with the kind of writer pip is. We couldn’t be prouder to be pip’s publishers in Aotearoa and be part of sharing her work with readers.

🎉 Poorhara is back! We know lots of readers have been waiting anxiously for this extraordinary novel to be back in stock. Here it is – in February 2027, Poorhara returns in a new b-format edition, with a fresh cover design by Todd Atticus.

Set in the confines of a 1994 Daihatsu Mira, Poorhara is a journey of epic proportions – poignant, expansive and darkly funny. It won the Hubert Church Prize for Best First Book at the 2025 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards and established Midden Rahurahu as a very important literary voice in Aotearoa.

Our second 2027 book announcement is a sister publication to our first... On 11 February 2027, we are thrilled to be publishing Vignettes by Fleur Adcock. This is a memoir in fragments by one of New Zealand’s best and most beloved poets.

From earliest childhood memories through to meditations on the getting of wisdom, these vignettes are beautifully written, irreverent and often hilarious. This treasure of a book remembers one of New Zealand’s greatest poets.
