It's postop day 18, and I'm doing fairly well! The procedure was successful, and I'm pretty much cured of my kyphoscoliosis. With each passing day of recovery, I have less pain and more energy. I'm so thankful to my surgeon, surgical team, and my family and pack. <3

I'm having major spinal surgery on Sep 21, so I'll be out of commission for 2-6 weeks. See y'all after!~ The surgery is T2-L1 decompression & fusion, so I'll have lots of titanium afterwards. The amazing bionic coywolf! ^;..;^ With better health & energy, I can focus on TF Bio with full force. ΔΘ

In a bittersweet way, I'm glad I left the Freedom of Form Foundation to start our new venture, Transforma Bio. It made me look at the problem in new ways, network directly with other furry scientists, & find creative paths. And it turns out that there's a hell of a lot of support out there.

By popular request, we've started working on paw biology~ ^;..;^ It consists of 3 parts: 1. Claws 2. Paw pads 3. Digitigrade conversion For a rough idea, I modified a sagittal CT slice to match human foot anatomy to the canine equivalent. Next up, quantitative modelling with OpenSim! #transfur

And of course, the addition of claws. I didn't model it in detail, because we haven't yet decided whether we'll try a biological solution, or rely on a permanent transdermal implant. More on that later~ ^^

We're going to be quantitatively modelling gait, weight distribution, and biomechanics of a modeled paw with pads, using OpenSim. It's a nice software package for musculoskeletal modelling. Stay tuned for our results~

The mods are: 1. Remodeled proximal, intermediate, and distal phalanges to adopt the "staircase" morphology seen in canine paws; 2. Metatarsophalangeal joint adjustment to ~45 degrees; 3. Addition of a metatarsal paw pad, along with some phalangeal padding. 4. Calcaneal reduction

(1/2) Thinking about how to grow human ear cartilage into a pointy canine shape. ^;..;^ Ear cartilage is special – it's elastic, and it is exclusively produced by auricular chondrocytes. These cells are notoriously hard to produce.

(2/2) It may be possible to produce them from stem cells. We'll have to do bulk RNA-seq & ATAC-seq on human ear and joint cartilage, & stem cells, to compare. From that, we can predict which transcription factor cocktail could convert one type into another. If it works, it'd be a huge breakthrough!

(1/3) There are some *really* cool things one can do with granular scaffolds for tissue engineering! Articular chondrocytes (joint cartilage cells) grow on polymer microspheres, which have fine-tuned material properties, void fraction, & adherence strength. But how do we apply it to ear cartilage?

(2/3) Chondrocytes are a pain in the tail. If cultured in vitro for too long, they de-differentiate – they "forget" how to make cartilage. Scaffolding systems help, where they grow on tuned polymer surfaces. Auricular chondrocytes, which produce elastic ear cartilage, also have this problem.

(3/3) What if we could adapt existing microsphere approaches for joint cartilage, & use them for elastic ear cartilage instead? Different material properties are likely needed. But that's the thing – all those properties are fine-tunable~ I spoke to a professor who thinks this should be possible!

Is it just me, or... is werewolf TF media, where the TF is temporary, a bit dysphoric for y'all too? If I were to become my ideal coywolf self, I'd never want to go back, even if I could. Not even for a little while. I can't imagine ever giving up that feeling once I have it. #therian #werewolf

I guess the good news is that for freedom of form and furry body modification, anything we do will probably be permanent anyways. And I'm ecstatic for that. I'm looking forward to the day, decades from now, when I finally get to look in the mirror and see *me*. 🐺
