Euonymus alatus, aka the Burning Bush, is native to Asia, but lots of them have been brought to North America over the last couple of centuries. I love watching this one, planted in my front yard, make its top-down colour change each autumn.

Last night's fire at the grain elevators at the Halifax dockyard - resolved now - appears to have only been in the tower at the far end of the conveyors, out on the dock, and not near any houses. The actual elevators of grain are far from the water's edge. #HaliSky

I just finished Below, the Netflix aquatic monster miniseries set in a small Newfoundland outport. It wasn't bad. The first 2-3 episodes were good, then it got hokey. Josh Hartnett's Newfie accent was mostly just Irish. I bet it showed a lot of folks a culture they knew little about.

Beside the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax are several monuments honoring immigrants or Canadians overseas. British Home Children, Polish settlers, Polish navy and merchant seamen, soldiers who died at Gallipoli, Canadian soldiers who helped liberate the Netherlands & Lebanese immigrants.

Evil Dead Burn was a good horror film, but not a great Evil Dead film. It had fun ties to previous film Evil Dead Rise, and plenty of wild and innovative gore and violence, much of it practical. Camera work was really interesting. But a weak ending with even weaker CGI left me a bit meh.

Okay, Backrooms was my kind of horror film. Very creepy and unsettling (I later learned it started as internet creepypasta videos), deeply weird, and not completely explained. A great debut: it's Kane Parson's first movie and is studio A24's highest grossing film!

I went to Mystic the other night. While this kind of dining isn't worth it for everyone, I thought that the waterfront restaurant demonstrated it deserved all its accolades. It's delicious, interesting, beautiful, experimental, hyper-local fine dining. mysticnovascotia.ca #HaliSky

It's not high-quality or evenly-sliced, and they're 375g packs, but Superstore on Barrington St (maybe others?) has a whole pile of bacon on for $0.99 per pack. #HaliSky

My coffee machine has a pressure sensor for the milk jug, and it controls the amount of steam injected into the milk. While in a hurry this morning I didn't place the jug properly, the steam kept running, I wasn't paying attention, the milk overflowed, and I got a drawer full of steamed milk. ☹️

Obsession wasn't a bad horror film, but it wasn't as good as the hype, either. It did a great job of setting up creepy scenes, and it makes use of common worries about unbalanced relationships, but some of it was hokey and ridiculous.

I saw Preeper-Rhaye-MacKay at a sold-out show at the Carleton last night. Great folk tunes as always, with guitar, banjo, and jokes from my cousin Sandy. #HaliSky

It's that time of year: the old SMU crew gathered at my place last night. We watched our alma mater crush Acadia at football, and then made a visit to the Split Crow. See you next year, boys! #HaliSky

Just watched Avengers Endgame: Encore in the theatre. This is a re-release of the last MCU Avengers film, with a couple of (very small) additional scenes to tease Avengers Doomsday, releasing at the end of the year. Fun to see it on the big screen again.

I finally finished the last season of The Boys. It ended with as much gore, foul language, and even more social commentary as before. No wonder the MAGA folks hated it: they leaned way in on skewering right-wing American politics and religion. Not remotely for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

Swedish power metal band Sabaton played Halifax today, and although I'm not really a fan my cousin and his grandson had an extra ticket, so along I went. And it was a fun show! All their songs are about military history so of course the stage had tanks.

I spent the last week in Las Vegas for work. After all that intensely dry heat, wild swings of freezing cold air conditioning, and enclosed planes, I needed to take some deep breaths of salt ocean air. #HaliSky
