The Predication of Opinion Every act has its intentional object. We don’t just work. We work on something. We don’t just walk. We walk somewhere. We don’t just choose. We choose among alternatives.

The power to buy arbitrates the delicate balance between personal freedom and universal equality, a balance observed in the breach. In the process, humankind reverts to a form of cannibalism; one can feed upon a fellow human without actually consuming their flesh.

The substantive norm of the consumer society leaves no option for noncompliance lest one expose oneself to further predation. “If you’re not sitting at the table, you’re on the menu.” *

The power to buy translates into the power of money. The latent potency of money; the power of money to buy power. In such a situation Kant’s transcendental ethics don’t work.

It is inescapably reinforced in every aspect of life. From the moment of birth we are calibrated along a scale of property values. It comes to the fore in its extremity during elections. Election campaigns are measured by the amount of money they raise.

It often determines the outcome of the election. The larger, “footprint,” left by increased spending has a demonstrable effect on the public. The power to buy is instrumentally conveyed unawares to a public eager to enlarge its own prosperity. Glad tidings by implication.

Something along the lines of Kant’s categorical imperative- “Act in such a way as to be a model for others,” shepherded by a mythical guardian angel called, “the general will?”

The motivational nexus defining public opinion is external and culturally defined. American culture is a consumer culture. Cultural self-affirmation in a consumer society comes with the power to buy.

Public opinion comes in the form of an act. The act comes in the form of compliance or noncompliance. The intentional object is a formulated substantive norm, such as a code of laws or ethics.

Agreement with the law is compliance. The intentional object can also be a differing opinion. Arriving at a differing opinion is an act of noncompliance. Public opinion is never a pre-predicated formless mass, like a blank slate on which a language common to all miraculously appears.

Our ability to choose among alternatives frees us from always choosing the same thing. This is a luxury not found in nature where existence is the eternal recurrence of the same event.

Cultural Dementia Culture suffers a form of dementia which mimics that found amongst humans. What was once known is known no longer. It is a progressive disease that establishes itself unaware by its host.

Each advance was conceived as a consolidation informed by efficiency. Standardization of technology leads to conformity of behavior. Conformity of behavior eventually results in the loss of autonomous thinking. The loss of autonomous thinking means the re-establishment of necessity.

A second nature regulated by a design not amendable. All of humankind’s brilliant achievements have brought it back to where it started. Freedom distilled humankind’s vital capacities and invested them in a structure of which each individual is an empty compartment. Zero Sum.

What the actual value of money is, what stands beneath it as collateral for the entire edifice, remains a mystery. It’s accumulation, and the power that comes with it, has a gravitational force of its own not subject to any scientific explanation. Its dispensation is a corruption of nature.

Having been reduced to a quantified variable, humankind was prepared for a type of regimentation only available to like units. This was accomplished by the triumphs of technology.

Communities grew into cities, cities into states and nations. These communities were inspired by the promise of civic unity while harboring the very mechanics that would pit human beings against each other. With the securing of property came ostentation, jealousy, and malice.

Along with property came the greatest encumbrance of all, the manacles of which humankind has been unable to escape. The quantification of human worth. Today we call this money. Human worth reduced to a numerical co-efficient.

Their navigational apparatus became dysfunctional and soon humans would need instruments to guide them from point to point. Their innate attachment to the workings of the galaxies were severed. These innate attachments are still found among species in nature not subject to contingent choice.

The attachment to the land would lead to an even more consequential change in human behavior. Communities grew by the construction of fixed objects. These objects eventually came to signify the division between communal and private property, and the division between individual property owners.

Not only did humans become dependent on others, the forming of communities created a debilitating attachment to the very ground. This attachment to the ground had other far reaching effects on human behavior. Perception became localized and limited.

Conflicts of this nature were not of a pre-existing condition but display a new relationship subject to contingency. Contingent choice is always equivocal. These intersubjective conflicts find resolution in an antagonizing state of disequilibrium where individuals are no longer equal.

These changes in humankind’s animal nature were not yet physiological, but would bring about new physical conditions which would have their own debilitating effects on humans’ innate capacities. The first of these new conditions was the establishment of communities.

Humans came to recognize that things might be other than the way they are when they became aware of their own consciousness. Self-consciousness could carry on a dialogue with itself in abstraction. Humans developed brains with the capacity to retain these abstractions.

They came to recognize that each had the power to make things otherwise. Humankind called this power, freedom. Humans not only had the encumbrance of choice, but the further hazard of others exercising their choice upon them.

The syntax of activity is regulated by a design not amendable. There is no deliberation because there is no choice. Choice comes with contingency; the recognition that things might be otherwise.

The contingencies of existence became an encumbrance on humankind’s animal vitality in the form of contingent choice. There were to be compensations, but these compensations would contribute to our inability to recognize the costs.

Or is it more on the order of zero sum? Is every gain purchased at a cost? If the symptoms of cultural dementia mimic those of humans, these questions no longer avail themselves upon our thought processes and remain undisclosed.

Civilization has gone through a series of changes that prepared humans to become an incredible receptacle of intelligence. This intelligence can be described in its broadest sense as the bestowing of form on matter.

The process by which the activity of thinking crosses the threshold of objectivity and transforms into the thing that is thought. Was this burst of production simply an increase in magnitude of our capacities? Is it all a spontaneous product of pure creativity?

Scientists believe to have isolated a genetic marker identifying the debilitating disease in humans, reducing the symptoms to a physiological schema. Cultural dementia can also be explained in physiological terms that span generations, centuries, and millennia.

If human dementia is marked by an inability to access previous events, and is unaware of that disability, could cultural dementia inflict a similar disability on culture itself?
