King Kong co-director Merian C. Cooper was born on this day in 1893. For absolutely all things King Kong, covering Cooper's full contributions to the cinematic legend, check out @raymorton1.bsky.social's book www.bloomsbury.com/us/king-kong... Ray is also one of the best film people to follow.

Crumbs! It's the 40th anniversary of TV Cartoons "When the Wind Blows"––here's my epic article now playing at Cartoon Brew celebrating four decades of Jim and Hilda Bloggs' animated thermonuclear heartbreak. ❤️🌍🚀🤯😵‍💫🫠❤️‍🩹 www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film...

They're both obviously very different situations, but it's somewhat amusing to me that a DC superhero sequel is being completed by a director who is a massive fan of Richard Lester.

In addition to her great performances, Eva Marie Saint's name was lovingly referenced in Gremlins 2, as New York's "The Cathedral of St. Eva Marie". The location, of course, doesn't exist, and was a composite of matte paintings and LA location/studio backlot work.

RIP composer George Fenton. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... He made so much great music across his career, but this might be my personal favourite of his tunes:

Tim Partridge@timpartridge.bsky.social

I hadn't heard this in a while: The original version of the theme tune to the BBC TV quiz show Telly Addicts. It was by George Fenton & sounds to me like if The Art of Noise covered the Gremlins rag by Jerry Goldsmith. Later versions ditched the cool synths for rock. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHo-...

40 years ago today, Top Gun was released in UK cinemas! For those who didn't catch my deep-dive into the striking visual look that Tony Scott gave the film, and the state of the art tech used to realise it, both above and below the clouds:

My latest video!: A 29 minute look at the great visuals of Top Gun (1986), from the cinematography to how they filmed those planes & the VFX. It also looks at the style of the early films and scripted work of director Tony Scott. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9Qr...

Very sad to read this. I wanted to speak to John Grover for my new video. He was an incredibly skilled editor & ludicrously underused. Labyrinth & Lifeforce both benefit so much from the pacy rhythms of a 007 editor, rather than the ponderous style associated with the fantasy genre of that time.

Mark O'Connell@markoconnell.bsky.social

To all VHS era Bond fans, John Grover was familiar. As an Assembly Editor, Supervising Editor and Editor, Grover's cutting skills sculpted 6 James Bond films - helping steer the Bond timeline from Roger Moore to Timothy Dalton. Rest in peace, John Grover. #RIPJohnGrover #JohnGrover #JamesBond

Three Days of The Condor (1975) GoldenEye (1995) The scene of innocent office workers being mowed down in the former feels to me like a strong inspiration for the scene in the latter. Both have a surviving main character on break & lots of effective close ups of guns firing.

Tim Burton's memory of fan behaviour at a sneak peak of Superman in 1978 (from Cinefex):

Fans sent 50,000 letters of protest to Warner Bros. when Michael Keaton was cast as Batman.

I still love the moody atmosphere of this show, or at least this intro. Everything happens at dusk, plus moody synthesisers and westerns just work so well together. I love the music especially at 00:16-27:00 and the sound effects of the aircraft at 00:22 are burned into my mind.

Bravestarr popped up in the Saturday morning cartoon compilation I’ve got going in the background - Lou Scheimer really blew Filmation’s brains out when he placed his bets on this corny old wild west bullshit AND was unlucky enough to release it at the exact same time the TMNT cartoon debuted.

The Real Ghostbusters turns 40 today! I watched this show when it first aired in the UK without knowing there was a Ghostbusters movie. When the film eventually played on UK TV in 1988, I assumed it was a spin off of the animated series! Great memories of this beautiful artwork on merchandise.

Darkwing Duck is often assumed to be influenced & inspired by Batman the Animated Series. Darkwing actually came into syndication on 6 September, 1991, while Batman came out on 5 September, 1992! bsky.app/profile/timp...

Tim Partridge@timpartridge.bsky.social

I've recently seen some of the beautiful background art posted from Batman The Animated Series. Although more Maurice Noble inspired & caricatured in style, Darkwing Duck also had a lot of striking, high contrast backgrounds. I would love to see an Art Of book for it & other Disney Afternoon shows.

I believe the opening title sequence of Out of Africa (1985) was the first non-genre/special effects movie that Industrial Light and Magic worked on. A miniature train was filmed against a bluescreen and composited over background plates of Kenya (that look like stills).

Holiday on the Buses (1973) Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987) Both of these scenes were filmed at Elstree Studios, in the exact same area outside of (the now demolished) Stage 5, which was dressed to look like both a suburban London bus station and the bottom of a Metropolis Skyscraper.
