Happy to collaborate with Haus der Geschichte Österreich in Vienna by contributing to their digital museum: Encyclopedia of Contemporary Austrian History! Up first, the 1934 'Austria in London' exhibition, an innovative form of cultural diplomacy as the Nazi threat loomed. hdgoe.at/austria_in_l...
Founded at @cam.ac.uk in 1933 after Nazi decrees that dismissed scholars from their posts on political or antisemitic grounds, the Academic Assistance Council provided humanitarian support to Austrian and German scholars, helping them find refuge in the UK and abroad. hdgoe.at/academic_ass...
The Haus der Geschichte Österreich's digital Encyclopedia of Contemporary Austrian History is a great resource to dive into interesting aspects of Austria's twentieth century, so it was fun to help bring it to life. @austriainuk.bsky.social @cas-umn.bsky.social @ahy-history.bsky.social
A beautiful reflection in @ahy-history.bsky.social on the life's work of Pieter Judson written by Tara Zahra, as well as on the use of the history of Central Europe to understand the present, and the responsibility of historians to inform the debate. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
It pays to pause and recognise the history around you. ‘Giro’ was the pet dog of Leopold von Hoesch, the German ambassador to London 1932 (that’s pre-Nazis) to 1936. @uk.diplo.de @ghilondon.bsky.social @germanhistsoc.bsky.social
Hoesch was critical of Hitler’s foreign policy and sparked a feud over Germany’s re-militarisation of the Rhineland in March 1936. His untimely death the following month enabled Hitler to appoint a more sympathetic agent - Joachim von Ribbentrop - to London. @uk.diplo.de @germanhistsoc.bsky.social
A building with a unique history in central London - 9 Carlton House Terrace. A fascinating site of interwar diplomacy on the eve of war. @uk.diplo.de @germanhistsoc.bsky.social @ghilondon.bsky.social

It might surprise you to see the swastika flag of the Nazi Party draped over von Hoesch’s casket in 1936 coming on to Pall Mall in central London, but remember that Britain would not go to war with Nazi Germany for over three years. @uk.diplo.de @germanhistsoc.bsky.social @ghilondon.bsky.social
Hoesch’s funeral cortège received an escort from the Grenadier Guards & was followed by Britain’s leading diplomats including the foreign minister and a young Prince Philip as it made its ways past Buckingham Palace to Victoria Station. @uk.diplo.de @germanhistsoc.bsky.social @ghilondon.bsky.social
What's the connection between Sir Walford Selby and Bellatrix Lestrange? 🤔 For 2.5 years during my PhD I worked on a riddle that concerns @austriainuk.bsky.social and the British Embassy in Vienna, and resulted in an unexpected link to #HarryPotter! Read on to follow my discovery! 👇

'VBC' certainly moved in important circles. In 1 letter alone, 'VBC' mentions having dinner/drinks/parties with 2 Prime Ministers, PUS of State for Foreign Affairs Anthony Eden (who later became PM) & @austriainuk.bsky.social's Baron Franckenstein (the Austrian Ambassador) - who *was* he?!
2.5 years into the project, I revisited the hundreds of photographs of the handwritten letters I had taken at @bodleian.ox.ac.uk to see once again if I had overlooked the key clue (MS. Eng. c. 6587, in case you're interested!). Nothing. 😩 But then... #IfAustriaPerishes

Great to attend the fourth Hella Pick lecture on 'Charting a Landscape of Antisemitism and Radicalisation Online and Offline' with talks from @isdglobal.bsky.social's Julia Ebner and @oeaw.bsky.social's Gerald Lambrecht at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London last night. @austriainuk.bsky.social
Fun to contribute thoughts on the history of the Austrian First Republic and its problematic depiction in 'The Sound of Music' to Histoflick, a new @sheffielduni.bsky.social initiative! @botstiberinstitute.bsky.social @cas-umn.bsky.social @ahy-history.bsky.social histoflick.com/2026/06/02/e...
And while I'm flattered by the erroneous title Histoflick gave me, although I earned my PhD from @camhistory.bsky.social and was a temporary lecturer in Modern European History, of course presently I'm Head of History at Radley College.
Rosamond McKitterick (1949-2026) A formidable scholar, an inspiring teacher, a generous spirit and a supportive colleague - truly, we have lost one of the great ones. @sidneysussex.bsky.social @camhistory.bsky.social @camedieval.bsky.social
So great to meet @chriswiederkehr.bsky.social and Austrian-British educators at @austriainuk.bsky.social this week. Thinking through the challenges of AI, the environment and geopolitics across borders brings minds together to solve global issues. What a great forum for discussion! 🇦🇹🤝🇬🇧

After Robert Lackner's fascinating talk on 'Austrian Refugees in the British Army' at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London, it was excellent to be in conversation with him about his research project and the complexities of wartime British-Austrian relations. @austriainuk.bsky.social @lbg.ac.at

After first crossing paths with @leighturnerwriter.bsky.social while he was still UK ambassador in Vienna and I was writing about his predecessor in the 1930s for my PhD, it was so good to have him at Radley to speak with our students last night. Check out his new memoir, 'Lessons in Diplomacy'!

'On Tyranny' by @timothysnyder.bsky.social changed my life when I read it as a History graduate student. I've since read and discussed it each year with my own students. It awakens you and stirs you into action. What's the use of studying History? This.👇 snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...
Incredibly exciting news out of @bmeia.gv.at! A new research project investigating members of the Austrian Foreign Ministry during the Nazi era, 1938-45, and after. Did they resist, or take up a Nazi commission? Were they persecuted, or persecutors? www.bmeia.gv.at/ministerium/...
As we approach the 90th anniversary of Anschluss in 2028, this is timely work, and an important interrogation into a significant Austrian institution's history - an overdue reckoning with a chequered past. www.diepresse.com/19589983/oes...
A few years ago, I presented my research on the Austrian Legation in London (@austriainuk.bsky.social) in the 1930s to Austrian Cultural Forum in London, and was joined by Dr David Schriffl, the @bmeia.gv.at's chief historian. You can watch the event 👇 austriakulturinternational.at/en/2021/03/1...
