Now, though new works emerge constantly, the conversation remains unchanging, and it is clear to me that it is utterly exhausted.

It seems to me that over the past decade “books coverage” became a quest to find ways of talking about books that did not actually necessitate any reference to books. Books as gossip. Books as cultural vibe. Books as vague indicator of the state of things.

one time I got a free appetizer at Cheesecake Factory because we were sitting outside and one of the propane tanks on the outdoor heaters was leaking. I wonder if Barack Obama knew about that

Is it even possible to follow the Sixers this season without Rich’s newsletter? I say no. Give this man your email and thank me later. He is the best Sixers writer in the city (in addition to all the other great stuff!).

Rich Hofmann@richhofmann.bsky.social

I will be covering this Sixers team with this amount of detail all season. Sign up for the newsletter here. You get one week for free to see if you like it, no strings attached. Plug your email in here, it is incredibly easy! broadstbulletin.com

ok this is a beautiful essay from @tmcallister.bsky.social on the giant yard skeletons. i take back everything i said. www.thesunmagazine.org/articles/278...

there are too many big skeletons in yards during halloween season now. it's too much. everywhere i look another fifteen foot skeleton. we have to stop the sale of giant skeletons until we figure out what the hell is going on.

All the national NBA coverage treating Andre Drummond as basically a one-for-one replacement for Mitchell Robinson is really setting Knicks fans up for disappointment. This guy stinks. He's not even as good at rebounding as people think

I am a 63 year old retired machinist in Dubuque, Iowa. I live on a fixed income because of injuries I sustained on the job. My grocery bill is higher than ever, and my son hasn't spoken to me in 10 years. The only thing I care about is that the pedophile President be allowed to build his ballroom.

I am dangerously optimistic about the Sixers, and I think they're going to start off hot (something like 6-1 or 8-2) and people are going to go crazy for this team like they haven't in 25 years, even after they settle down to a more normal pace

had a dream that my teeth started falling out of my mouth, but I got invited to do a paid lecture on how spontaneous tooth loss affected my writing process, so you could say my career is on the right track

As many have noted, one major competitive advantage the Eagles have is that their GM is empowered to make moves for 2 years into the future without worrying about being fired before he can see them through. Time to cash in some chips and think about the next real contending iteration of this team

worked 1.5 days at a job where my title was "editor" but my job was literally to copy text from a bunch of word docs and put it all into a new word doc. When I finished everything in about an hour, the guy next to me was like, "Wow, you're really good at this."

There are more 1-day conferences out there than when we started, and quite a few that on the surface look pretty similar to ours, but we feel strongly that we remain the best value in this space, and we've been honing this thing for a long time www.barrelhousemag.com/conference

One of my dad's big things was to never make any threat of punishment that he wasn't willing to actually carry out, no matter how onerous it would be for him personally. Anyway, this feels like going too far

famously he and I once had a full 2 hour showdown at the dinner table over my refusal to eat a single pea. In hindsight, he must ha been SO pissed off to waste his night like this. also, peas are fine

I probably have a different perspective than most on the "why don't men read more" thing, which is that I believe masculine eyeballs are too powerful for the page; when a man concentrates very hard on a book his eyes burn literal holes into it, and this can actually be quite dangerous for bystanders

I grew up watching literally reading TV Guide cover to cover every week. Watched any old slop you could get on the major networks (never had cable). Somehow never even heard of Frank's Place till will get this submission.

Two fun features to share today: In Issue 26, we ran an essay by Seth Borgen about Frank's Place, a groundbreaking, award-winning Black sitcom from the 80s that was unceremoniously canceled after one season and largely forgotten. It's really a fascinating essay www.barrelhousemag.com/blog/junked-...

very funny for that guy to describe twitter as open and inviting and friendly-- even pre-Elon, it was *already* primarily an app for picking fights, pile-ons, and going viral with quote dunks. The biggest posters on there mostly made their names by being performatively cruel to strangers

Eagle-eyed readers might note the almost total lack of hyperlinked evidence for this paragraph's many sweeping generalizations. Among them, that young readers want TOUGH GUY cultural objects that are cruelly being denied them by all these meddlesome women, when, in fact...
